I'm assuming the tabs are to help stabilize the post from rocking back. I was told a few times that they are not needed and were broken off to expidite installing a new windshield. how important are these tabs anyway??
thanks to a great forum.
Those tabs will break at nearly nothing. Probably as a result of changing a windshield rather than expediting it. The tabs are an important part of the windhield assembly and its stability. There are rebuild services.
i have had broken tabs before and have not noticed any problems because of it; once the windshield is installed on the body, the end bolts hold it securely in place. if nothing else, they hold the windshield assembly together while handling and installing.

If your tabs are broken and you go to lock a new tight convertable top down, the top windshield frame will pull away from the glass.
With broken tabs, there is nothing holding the windshield post to the lower windshield frame and they can be pulled apart by the top. I noticed this on my '60 before I had the tabs repaired and have not seen it since. The CC repair is much better than the factory 'design' and should not break.

possibly, but i really don't see how that should happen anymore than if the tabs are intact. the only thing that holds the top header in place is the screws holding it to the endposts, and the end posts are held to the cowl by 2 large studs/nuts on each side. i concede the possibility of the whole windshield frame rocking slightly backward, but that should not effect the the top header as the glass doesn't tie any of the parts together, it just sits in the weatherstrip and provides no structural support like the glued-in windshields do in new vehicles.

Have seen it any times. With broken tabs the lower portion of the windshield frame has a virtual hinge. A tight convertible top allows the upper frame to rotate with road vibration and out pops the upper frame away from the glass.
The last two C1 I restored had broken tabs on the windshield post when I got them. Took them to a reputable welding shop and they carefully welded them back on. Haven't had a problem with any of them after that.
I have two windshield posts that need repair but both tabs are MIA. Could you post (or email me) a closeup picture of the tab showing the shape of the top side of the tab? Probably a view of the tab looking toward the "solid" part of the post would work best.
Thanks,
Charles

don't worry about the missing tab pieces; if you have the posts 'repaired', they will fabricate new tabs from steel rather than cast metal. should never have a problem again.
maybe someone has a picture of a tab repair they can post.

I am planning on repairing the posts myself so I would like to know the shape of the originals. I do have some unbroken posts on my wife's 62 but don't really want to disassemble the windshield to get a good look at them. I have a picture of the repair from the CC website and it appears that the top of the tab is somewhat rounded, so I would like to see what an original looks like.
Thanks for the picture. Would you have a picture of the top side?
Charles
This is the best I can do. You can see that the top has a rounded groove in it to match the lower w/s channel trim. Note-the tabs in this pic are chrome because I had the posts rechromed.
