Ed, I put your VIN into the birtday calculator and got an April, 24, 1956 date for your car. These sequence numbers can be tricky because they grabbed blocks as they came in no particular order. If they found one that needed repair it was pulled, fixed and then put back into the production line. These blocks were also used for passenger cars as I understand it, so considering the large numbers you can't be too precise. The only rule of thumb that I go by is the later the VIN production theoretically the higher the sequence number, but there is an exception to every rule. In looking at the information that we have exchanged from M. Hunt recently, you can see some aborations of sequence numbers versus VIN production. I would say that you would be safe with what you are proposing.

Ed, sorry. One more thought. As I am sure you are aware, the block casting date is much more important than the production sequence number. The NCRS rule is six months from assembly, but I would get closer if you can find it. Mine is a late April casting date, so it is within two months of assembly.

I shot a couple of photos of the pad on Ken & Rob's black '56 when it was in Ken's garage two years ago in Florida, but I can't locate them - they're buried in here somewhere.

Garry;

I got the pics. Thanks.

I agree that the date code is more important that the sequence number. I am REAL suspicious of that birthday calculator wheh it comes to 1956 cars. I have heard / calculated dates for 2117 all the way from late April, 1956 to early June 1956.

I'm still checking out the car for original dated coded components. I have what I believe to be the original distributor and it is dated March 5, 1956. The original radiator is April, 1956. I'm still searching for anything with a May 1956 date on it.

Stay tuned..and thanks again.

Ed, you have probably already looked, but a lot of times there are dates stamped on the instrument guages. That would give you a real good clue as well. Check the back of the speedometer and I bet you find one. Only issue, is it the original.....

I have not yet pulled the instruments. I believe that they have never been out of the dash, so they may yield some interesting clues.

One thing I came across last night was "build" dates for Canadian delivered 1956 Corvettes. I suspect that the dates are more like dates the cars went to Canada but anyway, here is what I found.

Serial number 2096 has a date of 5/4/56, so that car existed on that date. Serial number 2152 has a date of 5/17/56 (or was it 5/14/56, I can't recall now). Anyway, I suspect that 2117 was actually build between those two dates, and probably closer to the 5/17/56 date.

My "guess" at this point, is a build date of 5/16/56 for 2117.

The birthday calculator says 4/24. Mike Hunt's old data has an estimate of 5/3. Don't know what the current version of the Birthday Book says.

Sure wish I could get a look at Jack Knudsen's notebooks.
