Currently my '58 gauge cluster is out of my car and I'm thinking of replacing the speedometer and tach cables. I should have the gauges back from Jason today, have it scheduled to be reinstalled tomorrow, and although I'm sure it would be easier to do that now, how hard would it be to do it after the cluster is reinstalled? I have to still order the cables, probably from Paragon-?, and is it correct they should both be steel jacketed? Thanks -
It certainly is the right time to lubricate the core with whatever lubricant you prefer.
Personally my move is to feed the core into a coffee can with about a 1/4" of engine oil as you pull it out of the housing. It coils up neatly in the botttom and gets soaked in oil. Feed it back in and you're good for another 10-15 years.
Thanks Bill. I am trying to avoid pulling the cluster on my 1967. The speedo works but has a speed-dependent squeak-squeak-squeak that I believe is the cable. I have a new cable but if I can getting away with a lube of the old that would be nice.

The tach cable is not armored and the internal cable is missing, just thought I'd try to put the correct one in at this point and time while the cluster is out. The speedo cable looks fine but dry.
