Default timing

Fellows-I recently sent in a thread about backfiring in my 67 L36. Before reading your responses, I checked the timing. The timing was about 6 deg btdc. I know the book says it should be 4 btdc. while playing with it I noticed that it smoothed out and the rpm's increased when I moved it to about 10 btdc (with carb vac blocked off). Logic says that its smoother and running more efficiently if the rpms increase. Should my timing be more in the 8-10 btdc rather than 4? The next few days, I'll try the suggestions posted to my original inquiery concerning the backfiring. I moved the timing back to about 5 btdc and will drive it and see what happens. steve

Steve: Check out this thread on BarryK's FAQ site. It should tell you everything you need about timing your engine.

For best all around performance, the total mechanical advance should be around 34-36* without vacuum advance hooked up. Initial timing (what you are referring to) is backed into based on the 34-36*. To set this advance, using a dial back light or by putting degree marks on your damper, rev the car until the advance stops coming in, then determine what the advance is at that point. Adjust to 34-36*
