Default fuel problems

I have a great '62, 327ci, roman red convertible. Have had it for almost 4 years. Its been in two parades and both times it vapor locked right near the end of the parade. I also am experiencing problem after driving for a while (so the engine is good and warm) of it not being able to get off the line. It spits and sputters something terrible. Almost like it can't get enough gas. Once I'm underway I have no problems. I can accelerate, etc. and everything seems fine. Its just after I stop for a second. I also noticed that when one of my start-ups was up a hill (slight incline) it spitted and sputtered worse then ever. I really think I have a vapor lock problem. One time, in the second parade, I simply poured some gas into the carb, it started right up and ran fine as long as I was going at a normal cruising speed (not the parade turtle-speed). When I bought the car it had no fuel filter whats-so-ever. I installed a sediment bowl type filter but this was all before I started doing parades and the like. What I'm wondering is has anyone experienced the same kind of behavior and have they been able to correct it.

Fuel pump is getting tired and/or sucking air.

For starters, check or replace the rubber hose at the tank and at the pump inlet. Probably grown hard with age.
