Default Erratic Engine

For those following along, I finished assembling the engine - intake, carb, new TI dist., new TI harness & module, new engine wiring harness, etc.

Car has been running fine, although the choke needs an adjustment,
the carb. seems as if it needs tuning.
I will qualify this statement by adding I have not driven the car, it is only run in the garage. Acquired a temporary reg. yesterday & had the car aligned.

Took it out on its maiden voyage last night, seemed to run fine except for the carb issue. Temp was high, will need to buy an IR gun to verify.
Stopped for a short while & had difficulty restarting, possibly attributed to battery drain via faulty VR (have purchased wells vr 715 - thx. CT Jack). Put a charger on the battery a few minutes & it started.
Got some fresh gas & left it running - continued along & the driveability worstened - car would barely hold idle & needed to be continuously goosed at idle.
Felt as if it wasn't running on all 8 cylinders.

Will replace faulty VR (it is warm to the touch with cold engine) & any other suggestions????????

FYI,
Checked float bowl levels last night & they were OK.

Was having a great time with the progress / with the set back.

New coil from Dave Fielder.
Charged battery last night & experienced same problem this AM.

car getting warmer, running kind of hot even, and after this it starts sputtering. Could be fuel related, could also be a coil failing at high op temps.

edit - see that you supplemented the above info as respects the coil ("new coil from David Fielder") - new coil or restoed old coil? If you have a real reason to supect the coil, you can always pop for a new basic black unit for $30 or so and see if doing so cures your problem.

Could the timing be too retarded?

Classic signs are poor running, running HOT and LOUD exhaust note.

Check all the tune-up basics - dwell, timing, carb idle mixture, verify that centrifugal and vacuum advance are working properly, etc.

Checked plug wires, dist., amp. & connections, compression test, etc. last night - still running rough.

Brought it to a buddy's shop this morning, had it running well in approx. 1/2 hr.

The timing was off slightly, but the carb. really needed to be tuned in.

Thx. to those who contributed to the post!

Brett, it sounds like she is on the road, that must mean it is time for me to get to see your creation?

If car has been sitting for awhile, it could be dirt & crap in the gas and it got past the filter and is screwing up the idle system.
