Default Distributor experts.. help please

Help please! I'm trying to finish up my brother's distributor.

I have a brass "spring post sleeve" (covers the pin on the bottom of the advance cam and limits centifugal advance).. If I use it instead if the rubber one, how should it be installed so it doesn't fall off the pin?

The packing material for retaining lubricant behind the upper bearing seems to be in good shape. I assume that some good grade motor oil added before putting a fresh seal on it is all I need to do?

I have always used wheel bearing grease on the tach drive gear. Is there any new wisdom on this one?

Thanks

Harry

Before installing the brass advance stop bushing, lay it on its side and give it a firm smack with a hammer. This will distort it enough that it will go on very tight. You can then tap it onto the pin with a hammer and seat it fully by catching the edge with a screwdriver and giving it a final smack with the hammer. It will stay if you distort it a bit before installing it.

Don't use motor oil in the upper grase well - it will just run right out the oiling hole in the bearing and be gone in seconds. Rather, pack the well with wheel bearing grease. The greease will ooze and outgass over time, providing the needed lube. Pre-lube your shaft before installation, and you'll be in good shape.
