Default 63 Speedo Problem

Had it out for a drive yesterday and the speedo needle stopped at about 35MPH and stayed there. I am getting a clicking noise from the tranny area, so I assume the cable is making that noise due to it being unable to turn.

New speedo cable, new Odometer and trip odometer, I took the speedo apart and cleaned the gears last winter. The speedo needle would seem to need to “warm up” as you started out cold. When going say what I would judge to be 50MPH, it would slowly make its way from 0 to about 40-45MPH and then seem to work fine. I put about 300 miles on it this way, it made no noises, just ran slow and needed to “warm up”. I have a 3.36 rear end, 205-75-15 tires, and no idea what speedo gear in the tranny, so being a bit slow was not a surprise.

Why would the needle stop- it doesn’t move up or down now?

Morning Don,

Just got mine back in and was trying out when rear spring broke. Had a forum member Gldnkngt fix my odometer and trip meter that wasn't working and tach that was off and I'm EXTREMELY HAPPY still have a smidgen of speedo hand bounce, think I pulled a little to hard on it while putting things back together, I was a little frustrated with the cramped space. Bill (gldnkngt@comcast.net) down in Jupiter, FL harrisonspeedometer.com had great turn-around time. Faces came back looking like new, the tape on my number wheels was starting to flake off so he didn't them. Price he charged was more than fair! If I had a tail it would be wagging!!!

Just be careful of that whileImatit disease,

Good Luck,
Andy

If the needle has stopped at 35mph and doesn't move, the problem is in the speedo cup inside the speedo head; it needs to come out and be rebuilt/recalibrated.

Thats not what I wanted to hear JohnZ. Does swearing help fix anything?

Don

As someone who has replaced my entire new dash harness with a borrowed one, just to run a test, before putting my new harness back in, I feel your pain.

I don't know if swearing helped, but I was glad I was working with all the garage doors shut in order to contain my colorful display of frustration

Default swearing helps...oh yah

I just got my panel back from Jason, looks great. Installed it yesterday took it for a ride..and speedo is way slow...Jason suspects it must have come near some magnetic field or something.....I AM NOT TAKING THAT DAMN THING OUT AGAIN THIS YEAR......FORGETTABOUTIT. hopefully I can play with some tranny gears and get it close, then take the thing out this winter and have Jason recalibrate it...again.

I disconnected it today- the needle went back to zero. How do they work? I have another out of an old Chevy- the needle setup looks the same and the gearing/cogs were identical. Could I just change the part the needle attaches to?
