Default Headlight Problem

Was driving last evening and the headlights started blinking while on high beam, seemed OK on low beam.

When I got home, I tried to close the headlights, but one side didn't close and the other side closed very slowly.

It this one problem or two?

All new wiring, fuses, bulbs.

Could be a loose connection at the headlights themselves or a loose connection at the dimmer switch. As for the headlight bucket closing slowly, it could be the motor gear or the grease being old and thick. Have you serviced the headlight motors at all?

Good advice on servicing headlight motors and checking connections. Also carefully check the grounds in the headlight and headlight motor circuits. The connector at the firewall is also suspect. Another reason for blinking headlights is excessive current draw. The headlight switch has a built-in circuit breaker. If your high beams are pulling too much current the breaker will open and close repeatedly. Some 'extra bright' high wattage high beams or even an old tired headlight switch can cause this.

I checked again this morning, the circuit breaker for the headlight motors is clicking if I try the motors, then seems to reset since I can hear another click. I used the manual dial to spin the lights closed, they are moving freely with no binding. The motors and gears have been cleaned and have fresh lithium grease and were working fine.

I have a new headlight switch (reproduction- could still be faulty?) and new dimmer switch and new halogen sealed beams (nothing that should be creating excessive draw?)

My firewall connector may have been a bit loose. Could that overload the circuit breaker? Or a crap circuit breaker? What amp should I be using?

I'm sure that the loose firewall connection could be the problem with the headlights blinking (high beam would pull more amps and it may have been getting enough power to run the low beams through the loose connection?). I'll have to wait until dark to see what happens.

The only original part in the system is the headlight up down switch itself. I guess I can by pass that to see if the headlights are working up and down.

Any thoughts on the circuit breaker for the headlight motors? Just replace it- I assume it would not be testable?

Thanks for the very quick replies.

Not sure it's the fix, but any time you have loose connection it causes heat and obvious voltage drops..

Found a short at the headlight motor switch- bare wire chafed by something. Haven't tried the headlights at night since.

Thanks for the replies.
