Default Changing Speedo Cables

I was in the process of changing my speedo cable, you know, removing the steering wheel so I could squeeze up in the dash and removing all sorts of stuff to get at it. When I pulled the cable out, I noticed the nylon cable shaft had been shortened to get it into the speedo. The new cable nylon end will not go all the way into the seedo. I am thinking the original one may have broken off in the speedo - I donno.

I probably already know the answer to this question but I just can't face doing this again and I am wondering if anyone has a good short cut figured out yet to pulling the instrument panel. That was a horrible F%$#&%@ job back when I did it the first time several years ago and I am not looking forward to doing it again. This will be the third cable 'cause I had someone else change it just about a year ago and it did not last 90 days.

Suggestions are welcomed.

Bob

one neat trick i picked up on the forum was to remove all the screws on the front and the steerinng column piece then replace 2 or the screws with 6 or 8" long eyebolts......... lets you pull the cluster back without totally removing and frees up hands for other things

Bob Bob Bob, Walk down the isle there at the Seaboard Ace Hardware store and get you some 1/4 20 all thread and cut it to 8"-10". Then pull one cluster screw at a time out and put the all thread in. Now undo the oil line, remove the steering wheel and drop the steering column. You will now be able to slide the cluster out and it will be suspended by the all thread. No need to fuss no need to cuss you'll have that extra piece of the speedo cable out in no time. Dave

Thanks guys! If I remember when I did this before, the harness did not give me much slack. Anyway, thanks for the tip.
