I have a '61 car with the generator driven tach. On Corvette Central's advice I bought the 60" steel tach cable to replace my broken one. It seems awfully short - (maybe its for the distrib-driven tach ??). Does JohnZ or somebody know if 60" is correct for my gen-driven tach ?
Then which end goes to what in the picture below. Does the long end of the cable go at the long end of the steel housing (like I have it in the picture ? or vice versa?
Then which end of the whole assembly goes where the stubby end to the gauge and the longer end to the tach ? or vice versa ?
The end of the outer housing with the tapered ferrule goes to the tach drive gearbox, and the end of the flex shaft with the little plastic disc goes at the tach end.

Thanks as always JohnZ - is 60" the right length for the gen-driven tach ? CC offered one in 72" but with the incorrect black vinyl cover it covers so many years I think its just a 'safe' length for all cars.
I looked at the TIMJG for the 60 last night and it indicates the black vinyl tach cable to be correct (after late 59 if I recall???). The spiral metal wrap apparently is an earlier fit. If I remember correctly, the ends are the knurled screw on caps.
Paragon lists the 70" cable Pt#1868 as tach for 58-61 and speedo for 65-68. I have that cable but have not installed it yet so I can't comment on fit. Maybe this weekend.

You're right daggone it. I ordered the wrong cable and that is what Corvette Central tech line told me to get - the wrong steel one. In this 1961 MIRA analysis on Page 8 Figure 6 you can clearly see the black cable - don't know why I don't look there first like I promised myself way back! http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...a_analysis.pdf
