You'd be a life saver if you do. I'm caught in the middle between the adjuster and the bodyshop regarding cost of repairs. Thanks for the effort, regardless. Bill

I found a Mitchells chassis repair estimate book that covers your car. I KNOW I have a Collision book but I haven't located it. I'll keep looking.

Maybe someone else has something to help you with?

Sorry.

I don't remember the older crash guide books for Mitchell going back that far. If you are looking for flat rates, etc. they may have something on their computer crash guides but you'll have to find someone who has that installed it on their computer and keeps their membership up. What seems to be the difference between the body shop and the adjuster/company??

I have an old one somewhere. The times are relatively consistant with C3 times for such things as surround panels, fenders etc.

I will thy to locate it.

Just found it. What do you need?

I did some more checking today while I was out running errands. Checked with several old time body shops. I found one book back to '68.

I also got hold of Jim Mayden who ran the old VV Cooke Chevrolet body shop in Louisville and now runs his own business out of the same building. He says he has the '65 book in his desk. Tell him what you need and he'll figure it up, fax it, or whatever. Or, he'll give it to me. He's keeping the book.

He also said that Mitchell will fax that information to you even if you're not a subscribing member. Don't know. That's just what he told me.

Maybe this will be of some help. Let me know.

What you may be running into, is adjuster wants to pay for patch back together like it was done 40 years ago, bodyshop wants to replace fender, for example.

Is the problem labor, or parts? or both?

The insurance company is American Classic. The damage appraiser is Assurant.

The appraiser (adjuster) allowed for replacing the entire front clip @$4720 (sales tax & s/h included). Labor to remove & replace front clip plus repainting @ $1843 (36 hours) and $661 for paint/misc mat'ls. Total = $7224.

Body shop says labor, paint & misc materials is not right and the mitchell crash manual will verify if we had a copy. So that's why I'm looking for a copy. I'm trying to get the two parties to agree so I can get my car in the shop and repaired.

To begin with, stated labor hours to remove and replace the front clip plus painting it. Painting should include feathering into the doors. Obviously, the assumption is that the paint will match. If not, a supplemental estimate will be a follow up if needed.

Wondering if having the bodyshop contact Mr. Mayden directly might be possible? They can explain the scope of work and he can provide costs as stated in the Mitchell manual. What do you think? Bill

Well, here's what I would do if you want to take advantage of this. I'd call Jim and tell him you have been in contact with me and that I said he could assist you.

I'd ask him if he would write an estimate based on your description of the repair and fax it to you. Of course, that takes time and time is money to him so I'd offer or ask to pay a small fee. If necessary, after you talk to him, if he's agreeable, your body shop could call. I could do this for you but I think it best to not be the middle man.

He used to do bodywork on mid-years. Many of them. He's owned several new ones. He'd even be a good place to take your car. He's very particular. I think he's mostly or all into late model insurance work. Don't know if he'd take on an old one like yours.

His number is 502 583 1245. The phone line is often busy.

If you need any assistance, feel free to contact me.

IMO, labor and paint numbers from apparaiser is correct if you are looking a MAACO or Earl Scheib repair, i.e. slap it on, bondo it up, rough sand and spray. of course the whole thing may fall off in two years,a nd the paint won't last long either.

Of course my opinion doesn't count with the appraiser or insurance company.

I can see 16-24 man hours just getting the front disassembled and the existing clip properly removed.

The problem is this. There are no figures for a one piece front end replacement in the crash manual. Fronts were not available. The unit had to be built up on the car. So there ios nothing exactly comparable.

Give me a few minutes and I will scan post it.

You did good. I've copied them and will provide to the bodyshop. I think there is enough for the adjuster and the repair shop to come to an agreement. Thanks so much. Bill
