I think you forgot the casting number and date on the back of the block. You gave the same number of 2106717 for the VIN derivative from the pad and the casting number. Judging by the pad number It looks like you have a 62 engine. If the casting number ends in 870 then the engine assembly number F0131RD is for a 300hp manual shift 327 assembled Jan 31 at Flint.

Thanks Old Sky...

The numbers are right..I thought that odd too..

I'm 300 miles from the car and haven't been able to get internet access for a couple of weeks except thru a friends cell phone...

In fact I haven't even seen the car in person..it just arrived from California the day after I left town..

Guess thats it for now...

Thanks...Stan

Hey Old Sky..

Well seems like at least two people at my shop can't read block numbers. I got to back to town for the weekend..

Let's try the numbers again ..

Behind drivers side head on block above bell housing..
2GM
3782870

On right front block deck, in front of head just below camel hump.

2106717 FOI3IRD (the I's could be 1's I guess)

So is it a Flint block, assembled January 31st., 1962...and a manual shift 300hp. 327 as you thought?

If so what is one of these in rebuildable condition worth...if anyone has an idea?

The block and crank /pan is in the cradle . Pistons in trunk. From the bottom with a flash light the cylinders and crank surfaces look Ok. Provided there is no block cracks or the like...it looks pretty good at first examination....for a rebuild, didn't see a ridge in cylinders...but light is a little poor. So we'll see when I get back to town again and pull it out.

Has an open bottom bell housing and BW T-10 too. Think maybe the whole thing is a '62 vette combo...according to seller.

Few other items ...generator, AFB with sediment bowl, brand new distributor....Script valve covers

Best regards...Stan M.

Thanks John.....for the numbers verification.

I've had acouple of inquiries about selling the engine and since it's a 62 and my car is a 61 I may sell it. Do you have any idea what would be a fair price for the block, crank, pistons, heads, afb carb.and generator....or does anyone for that matter. I haven't a clue, just rumors about what some sold for...???
All guesses right or wrong appreciated.

Stan...

If it were me and it did not come from a running car I would take the parts (Especially the block and heads) to a local machine shop I trust (both in the quality of work, price, and won't deck it) and at least have the block and heads completely checked (for cracks and pressure tested). You might even want to consider having it assembled and selling it as a complete short or long block.

At least this way here you won't have someone come back to you later on saying there was a problem and you have a better chance of getting more for it.

Just my .02.

!0-4 78 Vette..

I can do that and better if needed. I could build it to suit...and have it balanced.

But I still really don't know what they are valued at..or if being a '62 vette block etc. helps the value all that much.

Lotsa 327s built back when...

Just a wild guess:

If it were my car and I was looking at it from a judging standpoint and this was what I needed, I'd probably be willing (call me crazy) to go $5-7k if it were a complete redone block and heads ready to go in the car. Add for additional items such as Carb or other hard to find parts.

True, but consider this:
If this engine is from a 62 corvette (and I believe that's what has been determined), then if I'm the owner of a 300 horse 62 vette that is missing an engine, and my car was built within a few months of the time your engine was assembled and stuck in an earlier corvette, your engine is worth more to me than any old 327 because I can put your engine in my car and still get more points at NCRS than if I stuck an engine with a completely blank pad in there. I'd lose points because the serial number wasn't right, but gain points because the assembly date was within reason for my car, and the usage code was correct.

Hmmm...food for thought. I could build a real nice engine for the right buyer if I thought it would help offset the cost of my project.

My machinist and I go way back..and I have built a bunch of fine motors that he has done the machine work on. Just hadn't thought of selling anything other than as is.... That might really help someone with a first class turnkey drivelinere build...and help me offset some of my body work expenses too..Lord knows I could stand some help on that...heh!

I don't have the bellhousing and Borg Warner numbers yet ... I've only had the car home a couple of days while I was there...and am out of town again for a couple of weeks. Hope to get things in gear soon.

Best regards...Stan
