300 HP, I doubt it. What a mutt.
So here's the story guys.
300 HP, PG Auto.
Finally got around to putting in a set of new plugs today.
It runs fine without a miss or any hesitation.
Dwell set at 30 on the button.
Initial timing at 12 and total at 36.
Pulling 18 vacuum at idle after tweaking the carb.
Over the winter I bought and installed a 4:11 thinking that would help, nope.
This car couldn't break the tires loose in a rainstorm.
Hell, I couldn't even brake torque it.
Im not looking to tear up the streets but it should perform better than a 78 Impala.
Thanks, Pete

i am no expert but it could be the PG auto....
from what i am told it is the equivlent of starting in 2nd gear and shifting to 4th ... you do nto get the off the line power you may want

You aren't gonna break the rear tires loose with a PG. Not going to happen mo matter what rear end you put in.
And a 300 HP motor is probably 175 RWHP. 175 HP at 4600 RPM, you probably have 25 HP at idle.

Depending on what your long term plans are for this car, I would yank out the PG and put a 4-speed in if you just want to drive it and have decent performance. The conversion is simple and affordable, all parts are readily available.
I had a similar 300HP PG 65 air coupe years ago, it wouldn't get out of it's own way, what a slug. Sold it and swore I would never have another PG Corvette. I have kept that promise to myself, all 4-speeds in my garage.

Is there a laundry list available for a 4 speed conversion?
I guess the only thing that I would have to buy used is the trans?
Pedals and all the other parts from a vender?
Thanks, Pete

Wasnt the powerglide buyer getting his Corvette for looks only? Performance was never a issue for a PG owner correct? Isnt that why GM only alloted the base engine with the PG?

4 speed conversion is a pain.
I would consider getting a Turbo 350 that has been professionally performance built for crisp shifts and less slip. It should bolt right in, maybe a yolk change, can't be sure, too long since i was swapping auto trannys
Maybe a more modern auto trans like a 200 would be better, but I know next to nothing about the 200.

12.14 w/ the original 327
Despite our upgrades, compared to modern performance cars, our 327/300 A/T car is a slug too.
A TH350 went in and we were able to use the stock shifter by fabbing a brkt for it. We've since replaced the TH350 with a 700R4. You can get everything for the swap from www.700r4.com I wouldn't mess with a TH350. I'd run a performance built 700R4, with the upgrades to handle any future planned mods.

What about a performance built PG with a mild stall speed?
If I stick with an auto, I still have the 2 speed PG console.

My Dad had a '66 327/300 pg. with AC convert. It was a super nice car. No it wasn't a ground pounder, but it sure was a nice car. I wish I would have bought it from him when he sold it. I would leave your car as it is, or seek another car that meets your performance reguirements.

Pete,
the 300 horse motor is a torque motor, not a rev motor.... I'd go with the turbo 350, I think you can get a kit to make the power glide shifter detent for the 3 speed.
Also, I think the 4.11 gear might be too much, you are passing throught the sweet spot in the motor too quick.

This is a tough crowd. I notice the powergliders are still in the tall grass. Pete; find a gravel road, rev it to 4g and in one swift motion, move the stick aft and floor it.
Get back to us/me. Guess what trans I got!
