Default Mid-year power window conversion advice?

The switch plugs into the harness either way. Does it matter?

I have to make a retangular hole in the tunnel (from the top) and a smaller one, with two screw holes, in the console cover.

My plan is to center the small hole in the console side to side and front to back between the trim in back and the shift pattern plate. Then I planned to center the larger hole underneath by locating from the smaller top hole.

Is there a flaw in my plan? I have the AIM pages and all of the parts ready to go.

If you get it backwards, you might have to push down on the switch to raise the window and vice versa. Test before replacing the console screws!

CCC, when I added PW to my 65 years ago, I found there was a slightly raised casting outline on the underside of the console. Don't know if all years came with them but the factory may have used that raised marking as a guide for cutting the rectangular switch hole for cars that were receiving PW.

The underside of my console DOES NOT have that raised area to use as a guide.

It was built in June of 1965, which would make it one of the last cars of that model year. Therefore, someone must have pulled an old console from the back of the shelf or something.

Back to Plan A.

CCC

Here are some pics of the console from my 65 equipped with PW. I can measure the distances side to side and fore and aft this evening if you'd like.

Dave Z

P.S. Found a pic of the trans tunnel with the pocket for the switch.

Thanks, but no need for you to measure; the placement of the hole appears to be easily determined by the four round impressions, which I also have. It looks like the four corners are equidistant from those round doo-dads.

From that hole, I should be able to properly place the pocket in the trans tunnel. Cool!

Another puzzle solved with your help! I will assume that you had those pictures on file, as I would have trouble sleeping if I thought you took the console out just to help me.

P.S. Got to spend a little quality time with your pal magicv8 on the Route 66 trip. The man would appear to be a mechanical genius AND a master of detail. My brain was worn out after a couple of hours!

Default How about another console?

Have you thought about buying a used cinsole and keeping yours for when needed or trading?
Auto or 4 speed?

I only thought about buying a new one with the hole already done, but then I decided that could be a fallback position.

It seemed to me that this should be a job I could handle, after all of the other stupid stuff I accidentally didn't screw up.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

When you figure out how to cut that square hole, please let me know. I have to do mine, too. It would be easy if the switch had a flange that covered the edges, but it doesn't. I don't know why they did it that way.

I am doing the layout of the hole, but a friend since 8th grade, who is an absolute genius when it comes to stuff like this, will do the actual cutting.

He has reliable compressed air, the proper cutting tools and, most important, the confidence to do it right the first time.

If you have the DuPont paint calendar featuring "Hot Hues" from 2005, you will find one of his creations as the March pin-up.

How did GM do it, did they make a retangular hole in them? They must have, because they all have the mounting screw holes.

I would think a Dremel tool with a HD cutoff wheel and a steady hand might do the job.

Default If

If, any of you decide to buy one and need one for an automatic I do have one that is in very good condition.
I'm not trying to actively sell it but would.
Ping me off line if needed.
