Default Repair Or Replace Sidepipes?

Seller says these are loud and smoke some. I like the way they look, and I'm hoping to just repair if possible by welding (at a muffler shop).
Is the breach shown repairable or will I have to buy new ones?

My first reaction to that is:

1) I general, pipes don't smoke, engines smoke and the pipes just spit out the smokey exhaust.

2) If that is a rust hole, and I don't know if it is, then typically the actual hole does not represent the full amount of metal that has been compromised, and you'll have to cut a lot more metal out to eliminate any rust. Then, when you've patched it with new metal, it won't be chrome plated anymore and will look very odd.

I assume these are Hooker sidemounts??

If that hole is primarily in the tube, just replace the tube(s) with new ones. If the hole is in the header and mostly on the bottom...run with it.

Here's a wider angle of that pipe. I don't know anything about Hooker headers but it seems that the opening is in the actual pipe. The seller says it's a good driver and just suggested that I may want to repair or replace...not had to.
I didn't like seeing the rust on them though. The all chrome look would have been nice. Steel wool?
Also, he didn't say how much smoke came through...hoping it's not burning alot of oil.

If you really like the pipes, I'd suggest the following:

1) Keep your eyes open for a used set of chrome hooker headers and pipes to install in place of these rusty ones. There's bound to be a set sitting in someone's garage that were removed when the current owner restored the car. You may post a Wanted ad here on the C1/C2 Parts section see if someone has an old set they removed that they will sell for cheap (assuming you prefer not to buy a new set)

2) For now, simply add that to the list of things to do. Don't spend any money on new pipes until you take delivery of the car and are able to closely assess the overall condition of the car, and whether or not you will be keeping it.

So these are Hookers then? Thanks...I'll keep an eye open for replacements. I bought the car with the intention of keeping it, even if in the family. I had a 1990 Mercedes 560 SEC, and when I got interested in off roading and Jeeps, I gave it to my brother, who restored it to it's original glory and has been offered $$$ for it, but he won't sell. By the way, he has a 2005 Vette.
