I've been trying to learn as much as I can before I get my '65 delivered next week, and hence I've been reading all of the old threads . They begin on page 183, dated 04/05/2007. I've made it up to page 163 so far.
Are there any threads previous to that date?
Also, I was tempted to post in several of those but stopped myself short after remembering that I did that once in a different forum and got flamed (basically I was reminded that the thread was too old). But one would think that if the thread is not closed and is pertinent to a specific problem that a new owner may have, it would be tolerated, yes?
I don't particularly want to "revive" threads just for that reason, but it doesn't make sense to me to start a whole new thread if there's good info within the old one too.
Is that ok?
Lots of threads out there older but you have to use the search function. There is a box that you can check for the archives that will allow you to search later in time. I take it that you have just gone to the last page that you can. If the thread is not locked you can bring it back to the top.
Welcome to the CF, I forgot to do that in your first thread. You'll have to post pics up of the car when you get it delivered. Good luck and ask lots of questions. There are lots of guys here on the CF that can help. Then again there are a lot of Corvette guys out there on the Left coast that can help too... Duke is out there somewhere and I'm sure he will work with you. Dave
Here's a brief "How to" for searching the archives. You have to choose your search terms carefully sometimes. Users here report "hit or miss" results on occasion.
To answer your question about reviving old threads, the rule of thumb I have is if the original old thread is pretty close to the same subject I want to post about but did not answer the question I want to ask, it's fine to start a new thread.
Where the flaming often comes into play is when a thread is revived in this manner to ask a question already answered/buried on one of the earlier pages of that same revived thread. I moderated a VW forum for several years and we used to constantly advise users to read the thread front to back before posting a question. A lot of people read the title and maybe first few posts of a 12 page thread then post a question answered back on page 9 a year ago. It's a bit irritating to have a thread from last Summer bumped to repeat a question that received a dozen answers at that time but the new poster never bothered to dig deep enough for whatever reason.
Also, use your best judgment. If you think it makes sense go ahead and revive the old thread because it's such a perfect match to what you were about to submit as a new one, just be up front about the bumpage -- "Sorry to bump an old thread, but I didn't see an answer to a question I have yet...."
Hope that helps, and though I'm a relative newbie myself, welcome.
ps - we really don't flame CF members all that much on here for imperfect forum posting etiquette like some other sites I am on. You will be treated kindly and fairly, and there are no dumb questions, even if they have been asked a trillion times already. If you decide to tackle a project, ask a bunch of questions, and post up your experience and results - that's how the "database of knowledge" gets improved.
If you want to use that searchy key beforehand, that would be great, but many seem incapable of that here, and what the hell, we can dive into another "help, my 65 Corvette small block runs hot" thread again on a moment's notice.
Thanks guys. I think that was my problem. I was trying to search the threads and only got recent ones that really didn't answer my questions about what I was thinking of doing when I get the car.
The older ones have more pertinent info for my purposes.
I'll continue to read the current "older" threads for now and perhaps do the archive thing eventually. I don't think I would want to revive a thread that has more than two pages anyway...I would just ask a new question. I'm supposed to get her this week sometime. I just hope it didn't catch on fire in the covered transport...I've been reading horror stories in the older threads!
Before I knew my way around here I was guilty of rehashing some old questions and stuff that is in the 'stickys'..... The gurus on here were exceedingly kind and patient. One member even had me up to his house and put the car on his lift to do a quick checkout.
Don't be too paranoid about the car...these 'oldies' are tougher than you think. In the 2nd month of owning my '61 my oil cannister gasket failed and I leaked down to 1-1/2 quarts while driving my C1 with NO damage - this was followed closely by an engine fire caused by a "professionally rebuild" (supposedly) set of dual carbs.
