My plan is to drill holes for the side and nose emblems this weekend. They have been covered up with the previous paint job and the only way to tell where the were is from the inside (the body is off so I have decent access to the engine compartment). My plan is to tape the outside of the body where the holes will be, drill from the inside with the smallest drill bit possible, then drill from the outside in with a correct 3/16 (?) drill bit.

Any thoughts?

I did the same to our '66 which had the hols filled during a previous painting. I would suggest that you startout with a 1/16 bit, then to a 1/8, and finish off with the last one. The smaller drill bit used reduces possibility of chipping the resin (from previous filling) and causing a blemish.

If the body is not painted yet, then if there is any chipping, a bit of body filler will hide it.

Good luck and let us all know how it came out.

Two thoughts:

(1) There may be small 'nubs' of filler material protruding onto the underside; you may want to snap or break them flush with the inside body surface before you start to drill.

(2) Consider drilling by hand (don't use a power drill) - use a 'pin vise' or other manual chuck. The filler material should be easy enough to drill through, and it will afford you greater control.

Good luck!

Mine were filled also. I went to Schucks and got a roll of emblem tape. A simple measurement was all it took. You do have to cut off the nubs from the emblems, easy to do. Mine have been on like that for 6 years.

Emblem tape? Interesting. A double sided tape? I assume its clear.

I dont recall seeing any nubs from where the filler material filled in the holes--if I remember correctly, they were recessed slightly.

Thanks for the ideas of gradually increasing the bit size and possibly a manual drill. Will swing by the hardware store tonight to check.

The body is painted so I want to be as careful as possible--I dont want to add this to list of items I have screwed up and had to pay for.

Will keep you posted.

I had the same exact issue... For the side emblems I drilled with a 1/64" from the inside. Then followed up from the outside with the next couple of sizes till I was done (a little tighter is better here).. The front emblem holes were ok.. On the rear of the 65, I had two of the five holes exposed and I just put the emblem over the holes and pushed down SLOWLY.. Worked and I didn't even pee myself as I was pushing the emblem down.. Most of my friends at my club told me I had a big pair.. In any case this is what worked for me.. Hope all goes well..

"Didn't pee myself"

The rear emblem is another story that I am going to have to create another post for. I crawled under to check the tail section for remnants of holes and discovered that someone had bubba'd up the underneath of the body with resin and removed all traces of holes.

At some point I am going to have to persuade someone to give me some precise measurements or a trace with a reference point. I photocopied my new emblem and thought about punching holes where the studs go and use it as a stencil.
