Stands for Non Original Motor. Somebody replaced the engine the factory put in the car with a different one.
The factory stamped the car's VIN on a pad in front of the right cylinder head, so the original engine will have a number stamped on it that matches the VIN, a replacement engine won't. There are people who take NOMs and stamp numbers on that pad to make it look like the original motor.....but the experts can usually recognize it as a restamp. Obviously, in the older Corvette world, having the original engine in the car increases the value over a NOM.

Unless its about the direction of the knock-off wheel spinners or the left and right postion.
I got done for asking about that, it even was funny enough to bring it up in other treads again by some forum particular members.
