Is it an easy diy fix or does the transmission have to be dropped?
Just the opposite. The cluster needs to come out. The gear in the speedo head is bad. These guys have them: http://www.licorvette.com/
The next problem is getting the speedo set. You will need a shop to do this, I think the guy on 7th ave and indian school can do this if he's still around. I don't think the shop @ 16th and thomas works on old stuff any longer. If pulling the cluster is to much for yourself (search the forum for tips and how to's) I have a guy that does a lot of classic work @ about Bell & 32nd. He has a 66 in the air as we speak.
There are some good instructions online about how to yank the cluster. Its not as easy as you'd think...for example, you have to remove the entire steering column. For me, the real problem is managing the lights and wiring behind the cluster. Now's a good time to replace any burned out bulbs (I think I had 6) because you probably dont want to pull this thing out any more often than necessary.
My tach doesnt work, but I'm procrastinating like crazy to get it done.
I feel confident I could pull the cluster. Good I asked because I assumed it would be on the other end.
Where is the guy at 32nd and Bell? I live at 32nd and T-Bird.
