If the speedometer is working fine and the odometer is working fine then you have an internal problem inside the trip odometer. If you remove the speedometer you will see a long shaft with two gears on the end. (Pictured in post 18 by scott333, top picture). This gear is what drives the trip odometer off the speedometer drive head gear. I doubt this is your problem since it is working until 99. I doubt seriously if you have a problem I the speedometer head drive assembly.

Inside the wheels on the trip odometer is a series of trip wheels, if they bind up inside the wheels this would cause the problem you have. My advice is to remove this speedometer as soon as possible. If the trip odometer is locking up, it can cause the trip drive gear mentioned above to strip out, strip out the odometer drive gear and/or damage other internal parts.

Before the odometers and trip odometers were available in reproduction we used to take them apart to fix the internal parts. However, it’s to time consuming to do this considering the cost of the reproduction odometer.

If you remove the speedo, replacing the trip odometer is a snap. We have these in stock and I really think simply replacing it will solve your problem. http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=18727

If you remove it, give my sales staff a call and they can walk you through how to get this out! I really don’t think you need to send this unit anywhere. You can test the trip in your hand once it is removed form the car by holding the lock levers and rotating them by hand. If they bind up, you’ve found your problem. If they don’t then you will need to send this to someone for a repair.

My trip meter is stuck on 99. I can push the reset and it feels like the digits are reseting back to zero but the two digits 99 stays there. The tenth of a mile digit works fine. I hate to remove the cluster unless this is something that will mess up the speedo and odometer short term since the speedo head was repaired last year. Evidently not very well.

I would take the speedo cable loose! Yes you could do more damage to the speedo if you keep running it. Do you hear a clicking sound when you drive the car? If the wheels are not turning and the gears are you could do more damage, try to see if you can hear a clicking noise.

A tidbit I read on here about 6 months ago and was not aware of - you have to push and twist the reset **** (or twist the **** and push?) to reset the odometer. Is this correct?

I've tried this with my rebuilt cluster and it didn't reset all the way to zero and seemed to hang up. I thought I broke it but the trip odometer still turns. I guess I'll check the cable routing.

[QUOTE=buns;
P.S. Never try to reset the number wheel while the car is in motion.[/QUOTE]

Another tidbit I haven't heard before. Good to know.

Today I pushed the reset hard and twisted the **** around numerous times and finally all the digits reset to zeros. I drove the car 10 miles and so far so good. I am hoping the digits were just jammed. I won't know for sure until I reach 99 miles. I looked at the routing of the speedo cable and my 64 doesn't have a support to route the cable through. It just comes out of the back of the speedo and bends slightly down and goes through the firewall??

That's correct - there's no support for the speedo cable.

What year is Brian talking about earlier in this post? Are the earlier C2's different and not have a dash brace or is he talking about a C3?

He was refering to the routing of the trip odometer reset cable, not the speedometer cable.
