Default Choke cleaning

Ok, so the first of probably some basic questions coming as I put together my Carter(based on my "Carter leaking gas" thread).

What is the best way to clean all the carbon out from the choke housing? Can I use carb cleaner? There is quite the build up. This is my first carb rebuild and so far so good....no parts still lying there with no home...all cleaned up, new gaskets/needles/accel pump etc...

thanks,
Bob

When I rebuilt mine I soaked just about everything in some serious carb cleaner for 3-4 hours....I did not soak the bakelite/plastic choke housing cover nor the 'leather' diaphragm on the WCFB accelerator plunger of course. After that some good shots with compressed air and some toothbrush work usually gets rid of the grime and crud with nothing else necessary. Note my cardboard 'template' to hold the different size screws in the WCFBs. If you mix them up you have a devil of a time relocating the correct length screws in the proper holes!

Thanks fdreano...and thats good advise about the screws, but too late for me...damn. If I recall, there are like 3 different lengths.

Don't forget to soak your leather accelerator pump in oil before installing (assuming your's is leather).

Thanks Troy - I did not know that. The pump came with the rebuild kit and didn't look close enough to see if it was leather.

Is it essential that the pump be soaked in oil? (I already have the carb all put back together).

thanks,
Bob

I've rebuilt the Carter on my 62 several times. I never knew about soaking the pump in oil until I joined this forum, and thus I've never done that yet.

Over the years I've had only one pump fail to work, and now I imagine it's because I didn't soak it in oil in order to help it swell.

What I don't know, is whether or not the lack of oil, ever, would keep it from eventually performing correctly.
