Default Engine Number Experts....

A recent Thread got me to thinking....

I have what I think is the original engine for my 65. It was in the car when I bought it and I was told by the original owner it was the original engine. It has been rebuilt since about 20 years ago and is currently once more in pieces in my garage. I run a replacement as my driving engine, but I really don't know how original this original engine is. I don't know anything about the numbers or stamping styles. If this is not the original or a correct engine then I won't bother keeping it and putting it back together...if it is the real deal I will get all the parts together and build it back up....judging from the other various parts it seems like it is probably either original or a close era correct replacement.

here is a photo of the pad area. I think the numbers are as follows
5102033 FO9?THK The "?" is possibly an "I"

I think it's a 350 truck or cab motor.

Built at Flint in September 82.

Then again the THK blocks were also used in 71 for the 302 motors.

But I am sure others will have much better info.

That would be a bummer....I didn't know enough at the time I had it rebuilt to make sure the original block etc were not swapped....I would not be surprised if when I had it rebuilt in the 80s sometime that the motor I had was the original one and the one I got back was based on some other block. I know the intake and pretty sure the heads and pan were retained but it never occurred to be to be sure the machine shop didn't swap blocks.

I am going to clean up that pad area and be sure I got the numbers and letters correct.

When did they move to 4 bolt mains...this one is only a 2 bolt as I recall.

I read the engine code as F0911HK. This represents a Flint engine, built September 11 (1964). The HK decodes as 327/365 HP Holly, 4-speed, mechanical lifters, and air conditioning.

What is the engine casting number and date. Casting number should be #3782870 to be correct for 1965 model.

A VIN of 2033 indicates the car was built approximately November 10, 1964. However, due to a labor strike, there were no cars built from mid September through early November. The last car built in September was VIN #1425.

Conclusion.....could be your original engine if VIN corresponds to the car and the engine casting number and casting date are correct. Look at these numbers/dates and post what you find.

What is the cast date code on the block? Is it possible the "T" is an "I" which was used for 1. "HK" is a '65 code for the 365HP with manual trans and a/c. Is that what you have? Does you VIN match the 102033?

Well my car VIN matches 2033 and it's a 327/365 (based on the externals and what I have always thought) with 4spd and AC. Definitely a Holly and mechanical lifters too. Built date and sept 11 1964 also match (not sure how to establish build dates except by VIN which matches) with what I was originally told about the car. So maybe I am in luck. I should clean that block up and reconstruct the original motor even if I never actually install it in the car but maybe someday I will go original or the next owner might.

Where do I find the cast date code on the block?

On the back of the block, on the flange that mates to the bell housing, on the passenger half of the engine.

If your motor were installed, you'd look straight down at the rear, top of the engine, a few inches from the distributor hole, in the direction of the passenger side of the car.

It's F0911HK and the VIN derivative matches, and the engine assembly date makes sense with the car's production date - looks like the original engine.

All 327's were 2-bolts; 4-bolts didn't start until the 350's in 1968.

Interesting. I have always wondered about my '66 L79, the FII02 on it must be then F1102, or November 2? What date is this exactly? The assembly date?

Yup, that's November 2nd - the "F" prefix is for the Flint V-8 Engine Plant (the "F" changed to "V" for the '67 model year); that's the date the engine went down the assembly line at the engine plant. That stamping was done right after the cylinder heads went on.

Great thanks John Z. The full number is FII02HT, with the last digits of the VIN next to that. The casting date is I285, which I think is Sept. 28, 1965, with the heads stamped J165 and J195, so October 16 and 19, 1965 I think.
