I just replaced mine on a A/C car. I had the cluster rebuilt but before removing the cluster, I could not get to the bolts for the left side of the speaker due to the vents for the A/C.
I ended up removing the cluster, removing the defrost vent and speaker grill, and then replacing the speaker.
You might want to check with 62Jeff who did it also on his 65.
I replaced the speaker on my 66 Coupe just a couple months ago and as already mentioned, the clock and glove box were the only two items that had to be removed. One thing to check though and that is the overall 'height' of your new speaker. When laid face down on the bench, the new speaker I picked up wound up being almost a half inch taller than the original speaker. Both the old and new speakers had the 'coil' attached but most of the difference in height was due to the magnet on the backside. I still got it in without too much trouble but it was a case of push-pull-twist to get it into place. After all that trouble, the new speaker sounds fair at best. What do you expect for a $30 replacement, right?

I just got to mine by removing the glovebox and you can leave that complete instead of taking it apart and I didn't take out the clock, but I don't have AC so.... Arms looked like I tried to put the cat in the toilet afterwards though, LOL
I replaced it with a dual voice coil unit and flank it with a couple small tweeter enclosures secured to the dash with double-side foam tape.
I have 8" JBL 3-ways installed in the jack panels and a 4-channel JBL amp mounted under the passenger seat. I even made a grill (and new glove box over the hump) in the rear to protect the rear speakers from shifting cargo.
I use the stock radio, but the power transistor is bad, so I tap off the signal just before that point and send it to the JBL amp. I also added a wire to the power switch so that the antenna goes up/down when the radio is on/off.

Hi Classic,
Was wondering if you had the original A/C only speaker in your car still? And might you have a pic or measurments of the height?
Bill
One CAN replace a speaker in an A/C Sting Ray from the glove box side, but only if you have hands and arms like Tiny Tim. My XL mitts require me to remove the cluster too.
