Dave, I am going to the Dupont Auto Paint store tomorrow. I can get you Base Coat/Clear Coat codes if you want them.

That would be great Brett, the painter I met with last night says he uses Sherman Williams. He's going to check today to see if they cross reference to Dupont.

The NCRS' original Specification Guide book, first printed in 1989, included paint numbers. It shows the original nitrocellulose lacquer numbers as follows:

Sportsman Red: DuPont = 1905-H, Ditzler = DAL70418

Polo White: DuPont = 1783-H, Ditzler = DAL8011, RM = 54V91

I don't know if this will help, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

I just pulled the top protection foam off the fuel tank cover and man, it's a pretty dark red. That's the correct color for the exterior as well?
One year only?

If you need red and white to spray and match, I have 4 cars that have been painted the red interior and white exterior. I have extra paint and will be glad to provide it to you free of charge. This gloss level is different for places on the car and I can gladly share that with you also.

Default Correct Color Codes

MasterDave, here are correct color match codes for Polo White and Sportsman Red. The color was matched to "original" samples taken from an original 1953, #130, from areas that were not normally seen by the sunlight.
These codes are 100% correct, regardless of anything else.

Dupont Chromabase, Base Coat/Clear Coat

Polo White - P1923K
Sportsman Red - C9236K

Dash Top Red - Should be flat
I normally flatten down the trunk and conv top areas just a bit, taking into consideration that these areas were not buffed at the factory. Not as flat as the dash top though. This can be accomplished with a Matte Clear from Dupont.

I leave the steering column and steering wheel a normal gloss as the rest of the car.

Polo White door jams - I normally use the Matte Clear on the door shells and jams, since these areas were not buffed. This is accomplished by rolling back the tape so there is not a sharp edge when done spraying.

If you need the formula for an exact Pennant Blue match, I can email it to you, along with the tan for 1954.

Good luck with the project and please keep posting pictures.

Thank you Brett. I'm going with Sportsman red exterior so the jambs, etc would be red, right?

Bret, do you know if the early 53's used Sportsman red or was if it was another color? I was told by a well known restorer its code 4998 medium red, which is a little darker.

No disrespect, but this is a12 year old thread. You would be much better off to start a new one . Also if you update your profile to show where you are you will get more responses from people near you.

Other way around - the 53's were a lighter red - has alot of white in it
The 54's are darker.
