Default Spin on filter

I am currently using the stock cartridge oil filter on my 327. Considering replacing with the bypass adapter and a spin on filter. Corvette Cenrtral sells a kit. Anyone had any problems doing this??

Is there any benifit to changing to a spin on other than mess the cartridge cause during an oil change??

I put the spin on my car over 20 years ago. I makes changing oil a lot easier. You don't have deal with the cartridge filter or cleaning out the canister. JMO

Absolutely put the spin-on adapter on - I nearly lost my original engine because of a munged gasket in the cartridge after an oil change...lost 3 quarts in the street. Plus, if you use the NAPA 1060 'Gold' large capacity filter (its all black with no labeling by the way) it darn near looks like the old canister. Here is a picture - a little fuzzy but you get the idea.

Makes changing oil a snap... and the big plus is less mess. I too use the NAPA Gold 1060. You can also use the NAPA Gold 1069 which is a shorter filter than the 1060. The 1060 and the 1060 from NAPA are the same as the AC Delco PF25 and the PF35 filters.

Thanks for the info, when doing the switch over do you have to remove the original filter and O ring holder, or does the adapter fit over the original part??

I don't remember exactly but I think you get a new O-ring with the kit and the adapter seats up in the old canister mounting spot with two bolts (I put Lok-Tite on them). Its pretty straightforward once you have the spin-on adapter in your hand to look at. You can also use a PF-1218 filter in a pinch but I prefer the looks of the NAPA 1060 Gold...

some of these adaptors mut be used with the original by pass unit that comes with the canister filter....be careful here........if your adaptor does not have a by pass, then you must use the old by pass between the block and the new adapter!......

Exactly right - I remember now....one of those jobs that required 3 hands...

That's the Mr. gasket kit I think. I used that one as well. You have to remove the bolts holding the bypass and use the longer bolts supplied, that also hold the adapter in place.

I tried this once before several years ago. I bought an spin on adapter kit (only)from a local speed shop. Installed it and had major leaks. so I went back to the canister. This time I have ordered a ''bypass adapter valve and the spin on kit" as directed in the Corvette Central book.

That should do it -- mine works flawlessly. remember to Lok Tite the big threaded central part of the kit that the filter screws onto as well as the two longer bolts that holds the adapter plate on.

I have a similar adapter and I thought I read a post that you did not need the bypass with today's spin on filters.

If the filter gets clogged and that is the oil's only circulation path you'll need a bypass somewhere...in the oil filter itself or in the mounting arrangement. Its moot anyway as the kit I cite above requires keeping the original bypass...as midyearvette noted.

That one states that it eliminates the bypass (don't know if that's what folks want) but it does have a more secure central threaded piece. I'm OK with my Lok Tited in part and have changed the oil 3 (4?) times since its installation with no problems.

I agree some may not want to eliminate the bypass but if I understand spin on filters they all are designed to bypass if clogged. So with that being said do you really need a bypass once you put a spin on filter?

When you mention appling Lok Tite, are you speaking to appling the lok tite to the female thread in the spin on filter so that it does not back off???
