I have a C1 with the 270 hp 2x4 setup and I am having problems keeping the fuel filter glass bowl full. (sits at 1/2 full) as a result the engine will only idle for a few minutes before it stalls out. If I let it sit for a few minutes it will fill back up to the halfway mark.
The car has all new fuel lines, tank to engine, new fuel pump and fuel pickup tube screen.
There does not appear to be any restrictions in the lines or at the fuel filter. When I loosen any of the fuel fittings there seems to be a lot of pressure. I will be adding a fuel pressure gauge to test the pressure, but I was wondering if any buddy has any thoughts?
The filter in mine makes it look half full when it actually is full. Is your fuel level below the bottom of the filter? Just checking because if that is the case it could be something else.
I have the same engine with original Carter 270HP dual quads. I have a funny feeling you are troubleshooting the wrong problem. If you have any fuel pump pressure over 4.5lb and a clean fuel filter element there shouldn't be any problem keeping the engine idling.
You can use any vacuum gauge I've seen as a fuel pressure gauge (and you should ALWAYS have a vacuum gauge!). There should be a scale on it for fuel pressure. I would check that first.
Then I would double check idle mixture, engine vacuum readings, timing and float levels (at least on the rear carb)...
Thanks for the input, turned out I was getting air in the line and the fuel pump was drawing this in, The connection between the chassis fuel line and the tank fuel line was loose.
