I'm looking for my first c2....only been waiting 40 some years. Most concerned with drivability and looks rather than original motor/parts etc at least for this one.
The one i've found has an autotrans which seems much less prevelant/popular. At my age..i'm glad to have it to make life easier, but is this significantly going to reduce my ability to sell it in the future?
I would pay a couple hundred bucks to have someone look over the car and is knowledgeable with C2 vettes...Trust me you will be much happier having a solid car than a lemon...Good luck
If you look at some of the archives on this Forum about this issue you will see that a lot of Corvette owners/shoppers are a little older and now have the means to purchase the midyear or solid axle that they have always wanted. As some of us (them!) get older, they will prefer to have an automatic transmission to drive. Classic vintage looks and a little easier on that older left leg ! If you get the car and decide to sell it in the future, the auto trans market keeps getting larger (as we all get older).

You really have to buy what you feel comfortable with, but I really think a C2 has to have a 4 speed. Even in another 10 years, when I am 60, I'm sure I will still enjoy the manual shifting.

I'm 67 and still love the sound of a 4 speed clicking through the gears. JMHO. Bill.
Theres nothing like clicking thru the gears and if a Guy is next to you in a import drop it down a gear to make it rumble like the Amerian legend
does.
Also a buddy of mine bought a 4 speed because of resale.Pulled the 4 spd and dropped in a 700R.He saved the 4 speed to reinstall if and when he sells.
I know I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I personally would not be turned off by the automatic, as I agree with Rayvaflav that the market for automatics will likely increase in the future.
When we were looking for a mid-year, we were shopping specifically for a powerglide car so my wife would be able to drive it too. We had a tough time finding one, and did not have an issue paying close to the market for a 4-speed car to get it.
Another thing to consider about buying a powerglide car is that most have not been thrashed as badly as some 4-speed cars were. Alot of the powerglide cars were nicely-optioned too.

There will always be some buyers for the autotrans mid-year, but many many more will only want the 4-speed. My thought is that most collectible vette enthusiasts feel that "America's SportsCar" should have a 4-speed. Period, paragraph, end of story. So, get a glide if you want it, and love it while you have it, but do not expect a huge group of enthusiasts clamoring to buy it from you when it comes time to sell it.
Welcome to the forum. The following post may help provide some additional guidance on buying a midyear vette. If this is the type of data in which you are already familiar, please disregard. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1566508717-post11.html
Thanks all! I appreciate all the input. I went thru the same process when i bought my first Rolex. Mistakes here could be way worse!!!!!!!!!
But at the beginning, I'm just looking to have fun, and pretend young women would notice me!
aside from possible cost, given the choice of getting a car inspected prior to purchase, a proffessional pay for inspection or recruiting a knowledgeable forum member for a favor?
Here is my opinion...if you want an auto buy an auto...you are going to prob get one cheaper, like someone above said they usually have better options and have been abused less. That being said, of course when you go to resell it you have have less potential buyers than if you have 4 speed car..BUT...if you PAY less for one it shouldn't be any more of a loss/gain at resale than if you had a 4 speed car percentage wise.
If you fill your profile out and people know where you are you may find that there are forum members that are willing to help you out looking at a car etc...and you may make some new corvette friends in your area.
