Default EZ to find

Find plates and stickers all day long here on eBay. Good sets of black/yel plates seem to be bringing $150-200ish since July 1, 2009

But you will still have to buy the sticker, "tag".

Newbee to this site- saw the plate question and all the replies from California so I thought I would add to the mix. I have the California plate that came on my 65 when I purchased it (from dealer), have been trying to trace plate back to the owner without any luck. It was tagged from 2001-2008, I know in some states the numbers and letters on the plates represent a county, etc. Would California work this way? Also, any ideas as to trying to trace this plate would be appreciated.

I saw one set of plates that had 64 and 66 stickers on the same plate. What gives?

In the 60's, year stickers alternated sides. There was no month sticker. For example, the plates I have show a 68 sticker on the right and 67 on the left. Under the 68 is 66 and 64. Under the 67 is 65. I guess I'll need to figure out a way to remove the stickers down to 65 to be correct for my car.

I don't think the letters vs. year are correct as listed in the Mercury site. There may be some variation based on location. My car was an early 65 first sold in late 64 and the original plates began with P.

There may be some variations, but the general rule is correct. I was there and it was fun to see the next letter arrive (we had to amuse ourselves with simpler pastimes back then!). Switching the stickers is correct.

So then a 66 plate would only require one 66 sticker.

I have an early 1964 with original CA plates. In the recessed area where you place the year sticker, it has "1963" stamped into the plate.

Yep, my setup is probably not legal for you in California.

But for me in KS, front plate doesn't matter; E-Bay price for new plate was about $20. Original Calif 1965 DMV sticker was about $75---if you can find one.

That front plate is not a real license plate

Default YOM plate

I have a YOM plate on my '58 and it took some doing to get the job done. If you have owned the plate and are the last registered owner it's easy. However if you are buying the plate from someone else make sure you have a form from the last owner of the plate releasing ownership of the plate. I bought a plate from a nice lady who owned the car that it was on last, but had never changed the title of the car. The plate wasn't in the DMV system which made me think that it was a slam dunk as far as registering the plate was concerned but I found out different. You have to have proof that the plate is available and not still on some car in a junkyard somewhere that might be relicensed at a later date.
Good luck, I was lucky that the owner of the car was still available and was willing to sign off on the plate.

Here's the URL to follow the thread on the MercuryCougar forum:

http://www.mercurycougar.net/forums/...ad.php?t=43097

The 1963 series six digit, steel plate was configured beginning with three letters followed by three numbers. The 1970 series, aluminum plate was configured beginning with three numbers followed by three letters.

The 1963-69 series plate began alphabetically, with three letters beginning with AAA and ending in 1969 with approximately ZZW. Consequently, you can reasonably estimate the approximate year the plate was issued by the beginning three letters. For example, a plate beginning with D,E, F, G or H would have been isued in 1964. T, U or V would have been issued in 1967. W and X, 1968, Y and Z, 1969 and so on. So now, an entire era of great classic cars can run registered, correct year, original California plates and stickers (if you can find them).

IMPORTANT: DMV is asking (requiring?) that your YOM Black plates be correct year/letter range for your year vehicle. So, make sure your 63-69 Black plates correspond with your year vehicle. My research has shown the 1963-69 year-by-year, letter allocation breakdown has some overlap, but generally plates BEGINNING with the following letters correspond to the year of issue: ABCD= 1963, EFGHI=1964, JKLMN=1965, OPQRS=1966, TUVW=1967, WXYZ=1968-69. .
That sequence correlates to my '66 with SQH XXX and my '67 with TSL XXX license numbers. Both cars are real original California cars that still have their original license plates.

Default Yom

When I did my YOM plates for my 59 a year and a half ago California required you to have both plates, which is why a matched pair goes for so much. Also, if you call the DMV they can verify for you on the phone if the license number is "clear" or not. I don't know about any specific rules on the black plates though, but it took about 3 trips to the DMV to handle hiccups.

For instance I declared the sticker color as cream when it should have been yellow I guess, though there's no where I found where they actually declare what valid colors are...
I ended up taking color photocopies of the plates and sticker to send to them on the second try.

You can remove and separate the stickers using a razor blade and a lot of patience. stickers can be loosened from each other by soaking them in naptha, and then usign a razorblade to separate them from each other. if you already have the correct sticker and didn't buy it on ebay, you need 3M double-sided adhesive transfer tape (1 mp) so that it is really thin and strong. I forget the exact part number.

I would guess that your car was replated for some reason in late 67 or early 68. Or else it sat new and unsold for two years for some odd reason. My early 67 VW (built and sold in fall 1966 in San Diego area) still wears its black plates starting with T. To my knowledge, T was the first letter on CAL plates for the 1967 model year. I believe late 66 year cars received the S series. I think this is pretty darned accurate :
"My research has shown the 1963-69 year-by-year, letter allocation breakdown has some overlap, but generally plates BEGINNING with the following letters correspond to the year of issue: ABCD= 1963, EFGHI=1964, JKLMN=1965, OPQRS=1966, TUVW=1967, WXYZ=1968-69. "
