Default C1 firewall grommets

Can anyone tell me which grommets goes where? Do i need to glue them in place? Which way do they go?

I do not have the aim manual in front of me so I cannot look at the AIM manual to reference. I do own the manual though a picture is more helpful.

Thanks!

You can determine which grommets are which by the size of the hole in the firewall and what items go through them, i.e one with three holes would have three things go through, etc. No glue is used. Most are split so work one end in the groove, insert the items through it, then roll the rest of the grommet in place. If everything is tight work it around with the blade of a screwdriver.

I posted drawings of all of the holes and what they were for several years ago. It's for a 60. I made it kind of a contest to see who knew them all.
I don't remember if I posted here or on NCRS. I'll try to find the drawings and post them tommorrow.

I also suggest some spray silicone to make installation easier if they are a tight fit...

Should I first, put the grommets into the firewall before the firewall insulator? It looks like I should do this prior to installing the insulator though I just want to make sure.

Some of the grommets go in from the engine side of the firewall, and you likely should install them after the item the protect. In the case of those installed from the engine side, you can push them in place without generally having to get to the backside (which is normally covered by the insulation).

For example - if you install a grommet for the speedo cable, you'll play hell getting the cable to go through the grommet. But if you get the cable through the firewall, then put the split grommet around the cable and push it into the firewall you may have better luck.

James

I use a little Sil Glyde (NAPA) (something MagicV8 turned me on to) on the bayonet part of the grommet and it makes them go in fairly easily. Don't get carried away as they can become slippery. Also, when you put in the firewall insulation, make one of these tools that bigearl65 posted about a while back:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...cool-tool.html

I just put in the last piece of insulation the other night and all went in quite easily. Lubed the points with Sil Glyde as well. For whatever, reason, the plugs were a lot easier to install in the our '60 than they were with the '65.

Good luck.
