Ok, so i purchased the car with the same u joints installed, but now i cannot get them to go back into the half shafts enough for the retainer clips to snap into place. I have busted 3 caps so far attempting to press them in far enough.
Any suggestions?
Here is a picture of what happens when i put one clip in and then try to press the other side in far enough for its clip to go into place.
Im not exactly sure what you are suggesting.
I have already purchased more caps, but i am still not having any luck. Ive managed to get the u joints on the end of the halfshafts without the couplers to press in fine with all clips installed. It just appears to be the outer sides of the halfshafts that are giving me trouble. I dont know if the caps are different or what is going on, but i am pretty sure that i want the clips installed.
Put a straight edge up against the flat of the flange where it bolts to the axle. I'll bet it's bent and the yoke is crushed in on itself ! And it doesn't take much. Been there done that.
A couple of things, 1, you have a needle bearing that is cross-way in the bottom of the cap, or 2 you squeezed the yoke closer together not permitting the locks to seat....The joints are correct or you would not be as far as you are installing them. The wrong size is obvious and would not fit anyway. Clean the yokes before trying to install the joints as you could actually tap the caps into position without the vice as a press and a socket. We normally use the vice merely to hold the shafts...
BTW, each joint carries about a 7 HP loss so dont install them tight......there is a trick to strike the shaft just below the installed caps on the yoke to loosen the joints...after there seated and lock are in
The flange is probably bent. What I did was bolt the flange to
a piece of 1/4 steel the install the joints they went right in
after that.
Shemp
That's a key point - unless you do as Shemp did or use a spare flange, bolted to the flange at all four corners, it's quite easy to bend/distort the flange while pressing the joint, and the caps won't seat far enough to install the retainer clip.
