I'm a regular over at "chevelles.com" so hopefully you won't hold that against me. I didn't see a specific "tag" forum which is why I'm posting this here.
A friend recently purchased a 66 Vette Coupe and would like to know some specifics. It is currently painted Silver and has Blue interior with a NOM small block. Not known if the 4 speed in the car is original. This information is being relayed by the person where the car is stored, to my friend and then to me. Hopefully these numbers are accurate.
Unfortunately my resource material has very little reference to Corvettes. I do believe the correct color is Tuxedo Black. It has the correct big block hood (not known if original). The tachometer (also not known if original) has a 6300 yellowline and a 6500 redline. I believe the only high reving, solid lifter engine in 66 was the L72 which might lead to think that is what came with the car if the tach is original. I wouldn't think the 350HP small block (hydraulic I believe) would have had the 6500 redline.
It would be very much appreciated if you could decode the above numbers. Also, is there any way to determine if it was originally a 427?
Lots of info at http://www.idavette.net/facts/66.htm. Good information also available in the 1966 NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide available from the NCRS.
A VIN of 194376S127468 would be one of the last 300 or so Corvettes produced in 1966.
It's a very late car, built on July 27th (K27 date code). The "437" is the style code for a coupe, and "414" says blue vinyl interior. The only 6500 redline tach in '66 was on the L72 big-block. Other BB clues would be a rear stabilizer bar, bolts and forged steel caps instead of "U"-bolts at the inboard end of the half-shafts at the diff yokes, transistor ignition amplifier mounting holes (standard with L72, optional with L36), diff codes (AT, AU, AZ, FA, FB, FC were big-block only axles), 80 psi oil pressure gauge vs. 60 for small-block, etc.
Black is the correct color & black is the rarest for 1966, mine is black also, the 425 hp has a 80lb oil gauge & the tach you described is correct for the L72 sounds nice. :chevy :flag
