Beginning with the 63 models, there were NO crossover pipes thereafter. And the FI engines didn't even have the exhaust heatriser crossover passage on them.
Consequently, I REALLY prefer the tone of a NON-crossover exhaust system, and the 56 don't got it!

I am running the Allen's with the crossover. Sounds great and wouldn't go with anything else. Great folks to deal with. Tell them your from CF.

Sounds good from what I can tell. I have a new pair of their off-road mufflers for my '62 sitting in the basement, been there two years...
I have two concerns; I will probably get the car judged one more time, will I loose points (300 glide)?
Also, with the automatic will they drone at highway speeds? I plan on driving down to the national this summer, two days each way... Plus we do a few weekend away shows with it anyway, don't want it to become hell with the top up on the highway (rain).

Paul, They are actually pretty quiet until you stomp on it. I think it would give you a nice mellow sound through the gears with the auto and would sound great if you let it rip! Larry

Default my 62

My very original 62 327/300 had the crossover and offroad mufflers,
2.5" exhaust manifolds.

Are those Allen's with Off Road mufflers? Your car sounds great, but not much different than my 62 340 horse car with regular mufflers

Jeff, Those are Allen's with the crossover and round off road mufflers. They are nice and smooth sounding until you really open them up. I had the regular turbo mufflers before and they did not have this distinct sound and were not as loud on open throttle. It sounds great resonating off the cars I blow by!

Likewise. Not that much different than my bone stock '61 with off-road exhausts...

I've been trying to find out if you could get the 441 off road mufflers with the 300HP and Powerglide?

Paul
This is incorrect, we have a 340 car in the shop right now with its OE system still intact and no crossover with the 2 1/2 manifolds. Which by the way are the only Vettes from 56-62 with 2 1/2 manifolds with the exception of the 62 FI cars....that are also 2 1/2....

Strange Wally, my car still has the original 300HP engine in it, and what I am almost positive are the original pitted correctly numbered 2 1/2 factory manifolds.
I went and got my JG, and it shows the 300, 340, and FI as all having the 2 1/2 manifolds and crossover for '62. I'll ask over on the NCRS forum for fun to see what they have to say?

my old GM parts manual agrees with you (which doesn't necessarily mean it's right... ); but i do wonder about the necessity of a crossover on the 300 & 340.

Default 1962 Original Round Muffler Numbers

I bought a pair of never used round mufflers at an estate sale and was wondering if they are original or reproductions. They do have the exhaust pipes welded to them and look like they are right side and left side. The number which is embossed on both mufflers is 11325 4A and one pipe has the number A 3813535 stamped into it. Thanks for your help.

I know this is a old thread, but just for reference my 62 came through with the off road exhaust system and was a no charge standard equipment on my62

I thought only the FI cars came that way except I did see the crossover system on q 340.... however I don't know if the other engines got it no charge if it was even available with hydraulic valve system engines

Heres the sound of mine, 2 1/2 stainless to the round mufflers and 2 1/4 over the axle out the back

I bought a new '60 with a 270 HP solid lifter engine and it came with the round off road mufflers for free. I also bought a one year old '62 with a 340 HP engine which also came with the round off road mufflers. The '60 had the factory crossover, the 62 I don't remember.
