Temp gauge question

Temp gauge question
After I turn off the engine, my temp gauge needle does not return to zero but stays at current temp reading. After it cools and I turn key to on(not starting) the needle falls back down. Is this how it is suppose to function? All my other cars, the temp gauge falls to zero when turned off.
