Default Heating problem - questions?

I have a 65 with a 427 from a 69 Vette in it, mild motor. Gauge shows it's heating around 220 - 230. I tested at top radiator elbow with laser digital thermometer and it read around 210-215 degrees and at top of thermostat housing and it was around the same depending on when i tested. I installed a 160 degree Stant Superstat prior to these tests. It also had a 160 degree stat that I replaced.

It has a 6 or 8 blade clutch fan. When I cut the car off fan does not spin anymore. I can try to spin with my hand and it may turn 1/4 to 1/2 turn - hot or cold. I have read when clutch fan engages it will sound like a jet engine taking off - I have never heard this?

It also has an electric fan on front of radiator. When I cut it on it does not change the temp at all.

The radiator looks like it has been recored - not sure just looks newer. It has a fan shroud. When I cut car off I squeezed the top hose to check for pressure - it didn't feel like it had any. I noticed that the line coming from the radiator that runs to the expansion tank would leak (where connected to rad) and I could hear air coming from it when I squeezed the hose. It was so hot I did not try removing but I tightened it and that did not help. Either leaking at rad connection or hose is bad.

Any ideas what to check next? Any insight is appreciated.

Fixing cooling problems has quite a wide range of areas to look at. Go to lbfun.com. It's Barry's and Linda's web site, it contains an area dedicated to cooling issues and is VERY usefull. Dennis

If you don't have steam escaping from this leak you're talking about here, you're not running hot enough to boil water. Doesn't sound like you're even running hot enough to build any pressure in the system.

Fix the leaky hose.

I assume you have checked and made sure the electric fan is going the right direction, next have your radiator cap checked and see if it will hold the correct pressure. Have you tried flushing the radiator ? Last resort is pull the radiator and have it flow tested.

Mike
Why would you go to all that trouble if he doesn't even have any steam escaping?

I found a crack in the tank by the radiator cap.
