The 1955 T-Bird 292 cubic inch engine had cast aluminum valve covers with the Thunderbird emblem on them.
Where do you think Chevrolet got the idea for the '56 Corvette valve covers the following year?
First, FE stood for Ford/Edsel.
Second, the 292 was the ONLY engine available for the 55 T-Bird and the cast valve covers were part of a $15 dress-up option that included a chrome air cleaner and chrome fan. That option was available through 57 but the chrome fan was a 1955 and early 56 item only.

The Ford FE engine is a Ford V8 engine used in vehicles sold in the North American market between 1958 and 1976. A related engine, the Ford FT engine, was used in medium and heavy trucks from 1964 through 1978. The FE filled the need for a medium-displacement engine created by the discontinuation of the Lincoln Y-block V8 engine. The FE joined Ford's other V8s which included a small Y-block and the big block MEL engines.
"FE" is an acronym for 'Ford-Edsel'[1]. Versions designed for use in trucks and school buses were known as "FT", an acronym for 'Ford-Truck', and differed primarily by having steel (instead of nodular iron) crankshafts, larger crank snouts and different distributors.

So what if it was an option. I know that. It still says Thunderbird whether it's shiney or just black. Thunderbird engines were the old Y block and the later FE blocks. My initial response about the '55 T-Bird engine was in response to the poster that said it all began with the '57 supercharged engine which is incorrect.
The disbelievers here that think FE stands for Ford/ Edsel, please show FOMOCO documentaition that says same. I don't believe there is any. Ford engine, Ford/Edsel, Ford Engineering, Freaking Eugene. It could stand for any or none of these. That's one of the urban legends in the Ford world.
