Default Steering Box "index" lost

I replaced the steering box on my power steering SB 67. I lost what I call the index to center. That is, the wheels turns further left than right - and the steering wheel turns more turns one direction than the other from center. It's easy enough to take it apart again and reinsert the steering column.

My question is, is there a way to do this once and have it right the first time? or do I just do trial and error until I hit the center? Trial and error could make it a long afternoon of 'in and out.' I'm thinking there has to be a scientific way to do this.

Anyone have a surefire way do to it right the first time?

Turn to one side, then count the turns to the opposite side, divide by 2, punch a mark on it for later reference.

RF, there are punch marks on the steering shaft and the steering wheel hub to line them up. if you don't have them, can't see them. go from lock to lock on the steering wheel (about 3 turns) then center the steering wheel at 1.5 turns into the sweet spot, the middle of the gears will be cool...

Check out this recent thread with pics.

Bottom line is there are a few things that need to be indexed
- steering wheel to hub
- hub to shaft
- shaft to box
- wheels to box

The steering wheel horn button, hub, shaft, and box are all indexed. See the thread for pictures.

Yeah... I found that thread too.... My Flaming River steering box doesn't have a centering mark, so for lack of a better procedure, I guess I'll just eyeball it straight and put it together. Mistake I made was thinking the box was centered from the factory.
