Default C2 side exhuast... enlighten me

I was searching the web and came across this photo of what appears to be a '67(?) with side pipes coming through the front fender. Was this a modification or something that I have just never seen? I tried searching the forums but didn't really know what to look for. Just really caught me off guard and wanted to know what the heck it was! Thanks.

That was, is a custom job. Not factory at all. The car is a 66 FYI. Bill

Looks to be a custom configuration, '66 hood (emblem on the LF corner), '66/'67 grille, '65 or earlier body (vent grille opening behind the side glass for rear compartment).

Probably modeled after one of the custom cars built for one of the GM brass (Bill Mitchell, I believe) back "in the day", but I don't know any history regarding this specific car . . . . .

Looks more like a copy of the 1964 World's Fair Corvette GM built...

Here's a good read from Corvette Fever on the car-

Yep, it does. I'm not familiar with that car, but it appears it could be the same car with different tires . . . . even the outside rear view mirror appears to be the same.

That's the 64 NY World's Fair Corvette. The side pipes are typical of what GM Styling, and Bill Mitchell, liked to use on Corvette show cars and modified Corvettes for GM execs. I'm pretty sure the car still exists, I remember it had been on display somewhere a few years ago.

Thank God GM did not do side pipes that way. They look awful, IMO. And the three tail lamps should stay where they belongs . On the Impala.

That's the car alright. It's still around, there was an interesting photo shoot a few years back at the Unisphere in Flushing, New York, the car's return to the '64-'65 World's Fair (I was two years old and I was there !). Check out the archives at www.evankleinfilms.com

Back in the 60's if you had the clout you could get some interesting items from the factory. Chevrolet gave the top Corvette salesman in the country a new Corvette to drive and he could specify almost anything he wanted. An article in Corvette Fever a few years back had a 66 or 67 that was delivered from the factory with 6 taillights, mag wheels, blueline tires and no bumpers. The car you saw was built for Bill Mitchell I believe, the dash was also custom as well as other features. If your dealer knew how to use the Central Offic Purchasing Order (COPO) system many things were possible.

They must have liked it. It reminds me of the side trim in a 67 Buick Wildcat.

You're talking about salesman Bob Wingate. His '67 may have received two extra tail lights at the St. Louis plant, but it was an "off the assembly line" addition by a talented "body correction" specialist.

That green car is now owned by a gentleman in the software business named Bob Radke. He has a website with then and now pics of Wingate and the special '67 taken 40 years apart at the same San Fernando Valley locations. Just try Googling Bob Wingate Corvette and you'll probably find it.
