Changing 56 Engine Mounts
To change the front engine mounts any suggestions on supporting the engine? 2x4's under front of oil pan?

I am sure others will chime in, but I would personally use an engine hoist to pick it up with.

Have you posted pictures of this '56? I saw your value thread where you said "better than barn find" but I can't find any pictures...
Didn't mean to thread-jack lol

2X4's?
I always used a floor jack under the lowest part of the pan. I suppose you could put a piece of board on the floor jack.
The pans are pretty tough, they don't dent easily.

I've done it by supporting the front of the engine from underneath and I got away with it.
Doing it like this puts the engine in an unstable configuration though..... all the mass is well above the support points (oil pan and trans mount) and neither of the support points have any ability to resist engine tip-over.
If I had it to do again, I'd suspend the front of the engine from above with a hoist and chain.

Hardly unstable, unless you disconnect the exhaust system.
You are only jacking the motor up about 1/2". Plus no need to remove the hood, or risk damaging paint with a side hoist

Try this - supports the engine by the pan rail.

And the saddle that JohnZ shows is also very helpful if leaving the engine in, while removing the trans.
