Default 1964 Side Pipes ????

Did the 64 have side pipes or what? I see them in the 64 AIM manual on pages D375 -D378 as add on's. What was the deal back then were they only offered as dealer installed or did the AIM manual just add the sheets in case you would want to add them?

My 64 has long tube headers and a chambered exhaust. No leg burning getting in and out and a whole lot of noise out the back.

1st--its a convertible, though I heard the coupes can get hot.

2nd--I yearn for the day that I can do that, thought it may be before the end of summer.

3rd--not worried about leg burns, the pipes are covered up and I ride that bike you see on the left almost daily--I've been burned on that exhaust (and others) plenty. You remember for a while, then get burned again, repeat.

Getting new radials (Firestone FR380 whitewalls) on it Thursday as well as alignment and oil change with the correct flat-tappet oil (I put regular old Valvoline 10w-40 in it a few years ago before I was educated on the car and it still belonged to the in-laws:o).

But they make your car slower.

To answer the first question..... I believe there was a plan for '64 side pipes, but they were not offered until mid/late 65. Don't remember what the issue was that delayed them.

I asked the same question when I got my assembly manual also.

What is 4 to 5 HP , The sound is well worth it !
You can always add Vette Packs to regain HP and also add some. I put on 2-1/2" inside diameter VettePacks, 3 1/2" outside.

Someone added them during my car's life. Some of the metal tabs have been rewelded back on. The same ones on each side. And there is a place on each side where they drilled a hole for a support. My AIM show which tabs to take out and how to make the mod. That why I wondered if they were available during 64. Thanks

Have a 1964 convertible, 327-365 with side pipes. They sound great and the car runs like a scalded rat!
