I tried to cut the rubber into the rectangle shape and it looks OK but you can tell. You want it to fit tight to the stick, otherwise you'll have gaps for noise and fumes. I'm in the process of making a leather boot to go over my new circumcised original. You can buy them too. Check the search function, and you'll find where.

thanks , to bad some one did not make a conversion boot !.wonder if the hurst shifter could be turned round just at area where boot meets shifter
Though I don't have a Hurst shifter on my 57 (it's a Long unit with an original 57 shift lever adapted), I used a C5 leather boot that was "modified" (ie cut off the excess on the bottom and glued it to the console plate. Since the C5 boot has a larger hole it may fit the Hurst shift lever.

I wouldn't do that, you may weaken the stick there and grab a shift and end up with it in your hand. Turning it may take the hardness out of the steel's outer layers.

On my 62 Im using the repro original style boot that is reinforced with a wire surround with a 60s vintage Hurst Comp Plus.
Fit is perfect.
I'm sure there must be something out there. I used a Volvo shift boot with a rubber O-ring at the top that sort of molds itself to the larger-than-original-shifter that came with my 5-spd. The stock boot looked like total crap on the new shifter.....I'm not a leather boot guy....just don't think they look right in a mostly original C1.
Is that the smaller hurst boot? Mine just didn't fit well at all, will probably go with a C5 type ala Sebringbill.
Donald, how did you do the wire surround on the stock boot?
Frank, it may look good, but a VOLVO? Before you know it, you'll even have a bra on your car........
We'll see how long you run that pretty new paint job on the '60 before you get 'bra-ed up'. And, my Volvo shifter boot is a tribute to my long standing crush on the blond Swedish girl in Abba....
I used the stock boot on the Hurst shifter in my '66. I sealed it up with a black wire tie just under the lip. It isn't really noticeable, and it quieted things down.

The midyear stick is bigger than the early ones, so the hurst fits in the hole. I recall using the stock one for my hurst 66. I wonder if the midyear boot would be adaptable to a early console? That might be the answer.
I still have the original shifter may just reinstall it back in car, with new stock boot, or have a shifter rod made up may be way to go ,like a 57 stick and the early boot , have to call machine shop in on this one !
