Default Goodbye Centerforce!

..........and good riddance.

I put one into the resto of the '64 thinking it would be just fine. It turned out to be a vibrating POS, and after looking at other forums, it appears that I am not the only one to have a vibration problem with CF clutches. The car was not driveable above 4000 rpm due to the violent shaking from the beginning, and after 500 miles it's hasta-la-bye-bye for the CF.

Dropped a RAM Powergrip in and though the pedal pressure is a tad higher, it's dead smooth to 6000 and has no tendency to chatter.

I like it so far.

I'm sure they're fine too. My C5 has one in it.

Yeah - I have a Centerforce II pressure plate in my attic with maybe 700 miles on it for that reason. It may have actually been an innocent victim because I later found a worn transmission tailshaft bushing as the main culpret in the vibration. But before that I had a machine shop balance the Centerforce PP and he said they drive him nuts on his machine with the clacking weights. He guaranteed it as far as door. Went with McLeod and have been very happy with it. Couldn't tell any change in pedal pressure either.

Did you balance the CF assembly? Mine is smooth as silk.

I was under the understanding that you can't balance a CF pressure plate??

I've never had to re-balance a pressure plate unless I planned on 7000 rpm plus. We've thrown several brands on the stand (but not the CF in question) and all were within tolerance. The issue with the CF is related to the weights on the fingers which as far as I'm concerned is nothing more then a marketing gimmick. The weights were throwing so far off center in this one that they were beating on one side of the opening, and the retainer wire was broken.

Never again.

Me too. I will keep my fingers crossed. Most of the complaints I heard were about the weights rattling. When I installed the clutch I also installed a new Fidanza flywheel. It needed balancing, so I did the CF II also.
The machine shop rewired the weights and they are quieter than the first time around. So far everything is perfect.'The Forum needs a fingers crossed smiley icon"

I've had the Powergrip now for about six years, and it is problem free, other than a slight chatter. Need more clutch dumps to clean it up.

Had my CF clutch in the Camaro behind a big block for about 10 years, 11,000+ miles and countless passes down the quarter mile. It's never been anything but the perfect/smooth clutch. Got talked into one of McClouds street dual disc set ups for the Vette. Now you're talk'n crap. Pedal pressure so strong that it's just no fun to cruise in. Gotta change it out but with a Tremec trans, i'm just not ready to pull the enging to do it yet.

Google Centerforce clutch problems. There's a local guy that swears by them, and it's one of the reasons I bought in the first place. Guess I'm just one of the snakebit ones, but I never had a clutch act like that before.

They seem really variable.
I have a II and it's great.
I'm not sure I'll buy another one though after hearing the problems...

I've used the CF Dual Friction in many cars up past 700Hp on the street with no issues at all.

For the price it can hold a lot of power, shift well and have super light pedal effort.

I hated my RAM due to high pedal pressure, took it out and replaced it with a centerforce II and love it.

My Center force clutch is great, no issues whatsoever

Your problem may be traced back to the pressure plate. This happened to my friend recently, vibration above 5k, and it was the pressure plate.

I just installed a RAM Powergrip clutch kit in my '56 over the weekend. I won't be able to test drive until this next weekend, I hope the pedal pressure won't be too high with my mechanical clutch linkage!
