I have the original 63 radio and it works, but I have engine noise. I would like to replace it with a modern (are 8 tracks still popular) model with a CD player. I have seen kits in the catalogues and a rear deck speaker that fits in the boot under the conv top. Has any body done this? If so what did you use? I don't care for 1000 watts to turn heads, Occasionally my foot will slip off the clutch, that turns heads! :yesnod:
I can see you realize that you don't want to do anything to de-value your car. Is your ignition shielding all in place, are all the grounding straps attached and clean at the respective attaching points. Also, are you using resister spark plugs.Check you shop manual for the location of resistors relative to the ignition system. Not sure of the number of grounding straps, maybe 6-8, someone else check this. The aftermarket radio systems are very good so that you do not have to cut up things. No one makes 8-track anymore. The best now is AM/FM/Cass/or CD. Check the web sites and some Forum sponsors for these systems. I have a full Pioneer system in my '67, including a 6-disc changer in the glove box and a Amp on the rear wall pushing two 6x9's in a specally made jack board. Also I made a alum. plate for the front speaker location to hold two 4.5 speakers. I Love my music when I cruise or travel and this system can over power the side pipes. Hope this helps.
I have the complete Autosound system in my 64 and it's great. I overpowered my rear Challenger speakers (the ones that attach to the rear convert bulkhead) and popped the 4" speakers. It's only about an hour old. I installed 6X9's instead. If you're interested, IM or e-mail me. All you need is a couple of speakers and it will be fine. I use the Kenwood system (cassette) but wish I would have gotten the 'music search' function for taped songs. It was a simple swap and nothing special was required, even used my old ***** so it looks better than the plastic ones you get with the new system.
I put in a hidden audio system under the seat that works off a remote, I upgraded the dash speaker with a duel cone speaker that fits perfect and I am letting the orrigonal take a rest and just look good.
