Default 1960 - gas sending float

Three years ago my gas gauge started to read eractically but would sometimes correct itself after I drove over a bump or rough road...

Upon inspection of the sending unit I found the float was full of gas so I replaced the float with a new unit and everything was fine... Until recently...

I'm now experiencing the exact same problem... I suspect it's another leaky float...

There was no one available at home to help me remove the hard top so I'll have to wait and even possibly wait until early next spring as I'll be laying the car up in mid November...

Any one else experience a problem with these brass floats? It appears they can leak around the solder joints... Any good replacement ideas for floats that are not brass?

I suspose I could fill the inside of the float with some sort of foam that does not degrade when it comes into contact with gas...

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Ken

On my 60 the float was so full of fuel it couldn't get its butt of the bottom of the tank. At the time I didn't realize I could have resoldered the float and I would have been fine, instead I of replaced the whole thing.

Yup, resoldered the float in my '53 pickup and it was still reading right 20 years later when I sold it.

Good tip on the Stewart Warner.

A few years ago I retried re-soldering the float but all I did was make it worse... I suspect cheap made in China crap as the unit was only a few years old as is the current float... Not much is made in USA or Canada anymore....so quality suffers....
