64/65 Ignition coil
I am in need of a coil for my car. I have an early August 1964 car. The engine is a E 1 4 engine. Are the coils dated? If so, where? What would be the correct date for my engine/car?

All of the factory coils are made by Delco-Remy, painted gloss black and embossed on the cylinder with "12V" and the last three digits of the part number. The part number depends on the engine RPO. Base and L75 would have #087, L76 & L84 standard would have #091, L76 & L84 (early and usage is unverified) transistor ignition would have #196 and L76 & L84 transistor would have #176.
The top end is black Bakelite material which has the logo Delco-Remy embossed in raised letters. 1964 transistor ignition coils, option K66, have a foil tag.
There is no mention in the Judging Guide of the coils being dated. Dave

After checking your profile, I see you have a 65. Guess I should have checked before I answered. The info posted would be for a '64. Not sure what would apply to your early 65. Dave

Assuming your car is 65 FI w. trans. ignition early you need a Delco 1115203. 1115203 was superseded w. Delco 11150207 later in the model year. You might check with David Fiedler @ TI Specialty's for availability.

Dave, Thanks for the information. My car is a 65 but much of the car (including the engine) is 64. I know that the distributors were set prior to the engine being tested, while the fuel units were set later. I should have asked if the coil was set at the same time the distributor was set or was the coil set into place later during the assembly of the car (this could mean the difference between using a 64 or 65 coil)? My car is a non-transistorized ignition car. The orginal pad had a RF suffix that was ground down and restamped (by G.M.) with an HG. I have noticed on a couple of old coils what appears to be some kind of additional code (i.e. 6 D 8) below the part number. I thought this may be a date stamp?

65 FI - Sorry to tag onto such an old post, but was researching TI for my car and this post came up. I see you have an earlty '65 car. I have an early '65 also: #236, produced Sept 1, 1964. If you are still on this Forum, i'd be interested in comparing notes with you on what is correct for these early cars, given that many leftover '64 parts were likely used. Makes them a bit more of an adventure to determine "correct". Let me know.
