Side pipes

They are loud. That can be good, but driving over 20,000 miles this summer , and having the pleasure to ride in many side pipe cars, I can not imagine 5 to 8 hour rides in such a car.
You neighbors and the local police will notice you more than corvette fans.
Go for a long , long , long ride first.

Jack,
How ya doin. Fun to be back in snow country huh???? By the way, I drove my 66 to Corvettes at Stillwater in 2009. Was a 4 1/2 hour trip (only because I lost my way) with the sidepipes blasting, window down and radio on. Couldn't hear much of the radio because of the wind noise due to no AC. I've been driving my car for 30 years with the sidepipes and I wouldn't give them up. JMO

The original poster has a coupe. I have a coupe. My coupe is loud and the interior resonates with sidepipe drone. I love the way my car sounds, but I wouldn't do 2000 miles in it without ear plugs. From what others describe the convertibles are a lot quieter.

I also have the Sweet Thunder sidepipes on my big block 65.
They are the "no mercy" 4" OD 2.5" ID pipes.
The only problem I have found is there is not enough space on my trophy shelf for all the "Best Pipes" awards she has won.
Yes, it's loud. But it's a deep rumble kinda loud that's a lot like being at a good concert.

I'm sure some of us side pipe guys have done this but, this summer was my first. Had a friend drive my car and I drove along side of it in his car. WOW!!!!! is all I can say. It gave me a completely new and additional appreciation for the incredible sound that side pipes make under varying degrees of acceleration/deceleration. I now know exactly what other people hear, and I LOVE it. Dennis

Provette67 did the inspection on my 66 coupe. I follow him and the seller in my car as provette67 did the test drive. After hearing those pipes as he went through the gears, I wanted the car even before I drove it. Awesome sound.

I've owned my 65' cpe sml blk for 34 years, 8 years ago I installed orig 65 pipes, I love the look and the sound; yes even on long extended trips. I was at a local (so Cal) car gathering yesterday a.m., I was just about to leave when a fellow pulls up next to me in his F355. His comment, " that's how a vette ought to sound!"
My next mod coming soon-- Keisler TR 5 spd tranny.

Jim, Donny, Jeff, and the rest of the gang,
I had a great time reading your comments. I laughed at times and at other time just thought a little - something different for me.
I'd have to say that I'm leaning toward side pipes. The neighbors, the cops, the wife, and whoever else may not be pleased, but I think I will love the look and the sound.
Thank you one and all for your knowledge, videos, and sage advice.
Jerry

Love my side pipes. Have to be a careful with passengers who seem to forget about the fact that the side pipes are hot when they get out of the car.
Bought chrome Hooker Headers and Hooker side pipes from Mid America Motorworks at Carlisle, PA in August and will be installing them for a winter project. Thought the chrome pipes would look nice with the chrome wheels.
I would go with the side pipes. They look great and sound fantastic and I like the noise.
