Default Identifying engine??

My friend knows a guy who has an engine he says was out of a 65 Vette. The casting number on the back of the block reads 3892657. The heads read 51239 F0035HE. My info comes up with 65 327-300 heads on a '67 engine...he says the engine was never apart and the heads belong to it.
Can anyone identify this engine?
Thanks

It's a 67 block given the number. HE is 4 speed and 4bbl according to my book.

In 65 HE is a 250 HP. HF is 300. In 67 HE was 300 HP was the Flint designation would have been a V. Block is definitely 67. Where is the 51239 located?

Looking at the engine head-on, 51239 F0035 HE reads left to right on the passenger side pad in front of the head.

Either you're mis-reading the F0035HE, or it's a bogus stamping; the two digits after the "F" can't both be zeros. Also, the "51239" is missing two digits - it has to be a 7-digit number. What's the casting date on the rear block flange, about 6" toward the passenger side from the distributor?

The 3892657 block was never used in a '65 Corvette; it was only used in '67 in Corvettes, although it had many usages in passenger cars and trucks from '64-'67.

You're right I could be misreading it, I'll look again. Also should the extra 2 digits be after the 51239?

The first number should be a 5 standing for 65 followed by a 1 which is a filler number starting the production number sequence. The next 5 numbers would be the end of your serial number ( production number like 12345.)

OK...I screwed up, the first group is: 512395 then a space. I cleaned it, soaked it, brushed it, but could not even get a ghost of another letter on the bare metal. The second part is: F0305HE
Does that make anything clearer?
Thanks for your help.

I would say this is a 65 250 hp, manual trans 327 out of Corvette VIN 12395.

You are still missing a number on the 512395 number. Should be 51 followed by 5 numbers.

Cannot get any other numbers off it...Would you say it is a definite 1965 from what I can give you?
What is the difference between a 250 and a 300 besides the carbs?
Thanks again.

This could be a factory anomaly on the VIN stamp. They are rare, but they do happen.

Anyway that the original poster can post pictures of this engine pad?

If the engine is stock one easy visible difference is the fuel filter on the 250 HP is internal ( in carb) and on the 300 HP is in in-line between the fuel pump and carb.

AFB on the 300 vs WCFB on the 250, different intakes 3844457 for the 250, 3844459-300, 2" exhaust on the 250 vs 2 1/2" on the 300 ( if manual trans).

Don
PS. If you email one of us a pic of the numbers on the pad, we can post.

I thought 1965 250 heads were different from those earlier. What size were the valves pre 65 as opposed to 65s?
