after removing the carpet in my 66 roadster, under the wire cover plate under the sill plate on the driver side, found a green stripped and a purple stripped wire running from the FRONT of the car somewhere and exiting halfway back thru a hole in the cover.
they then run under the carpet accross the floor and end along the console where they are black taped together.
should they go somewhere or are they from a previous after market item?
HELP, I am ready to put the new carpet down.

Try to trace the wires forward and see where they lead. If they are alone and not part of the wiring harness, Bubba probably been der. If so, remove them. You could also just tuck them under the wire cover for now and lay your carpet. It would be no problem to access it later on if you need to. My preference would be to remove any wiring that is not stock or being used for something. Pilot Dan
Possibly wiring from a neutral safety switch / back-up-light switch. The colors are similar to what I found on my PG car and the wiring course you describe is specified in the AIM.
I'd vote for "owner-inspired"; the neutral safety switch and its wiring on '64 Powerglides was all external - the switch was mounted on the transmission linkage, with a pigtail that went up to the engine harness connectors on the firewall. It didn't move inside the body to the shifter base until '65.
