On my 64, the radiator shroud bracket is held to the radiator support with two bolts. Like a fool, I decided to remove the bracket to freshen up the paint. One of the bolts came out fine and the second came out about halfway before the welded/captured nut (I'm assuming that's what's inside the boxed support?) came loose. Now the bolt just spins but won't thread out. I've thought about cutting the bolt and repairing with a thread insert of some type but that would leave the nut and bolt remains to rattle around inside the boxed channel. Any way out of this one that you guys can see??? Dave

Both ends of that boxed upper channel section are open, and easily accessible; stick a telescoping magnet in there and it'll remove the remains of the cut off bolt and broken-loose weld nut. Use a 5/16"-18 aluminum Rivnut for the repair.
I had the same thing happen to me. I just wedged a tool in between the captive nut and the channel and I was able to get the bolt out.
I took the whole assembly out including radiator, but then again, I'm doing a bit more than freshening up the paint.
Good luck.
Jim
Thanks for the replies. Guess I didn't look close enough to notice the ends of the channel are open. Car's in storage elsewhere now but I'll get the Rivnut and be ready to go when the weather is. Left that job undone after I ran into the trouble. Dave
If you can get the bolt out undamaged, you should be able to put it back together without too much difficulty. The bolt has a point to it and should center itself in the nut without problems, then you can just tighten it up like a standard bolt/nut.
good luck,
Jim
The bolt came out about 1/8 inch before the nut let go. I'll put some Blaster on it and try to wedge the nut with something while trying to turn the bolt. I can always resort to cutting if it doesn't come loose. Think I'll use a Rivnut to reinstall if I can find them or something similar locally. I've found them in quantity but really don't want to buy a dozen or more.
