He has already ruled out red lines in the other thread. A man of obvious taste/class!
What do you think? Or do you?
The thin line whites didn't come out until about '68.
Saint: If you want whitewalls like the original whitewalls, you'll probably have to have them custom made. The whites I've seen are different width and are located differently in relation to the wheel rim.
Been looking at the narrow line tires on the great looking Corvettes of my fellow forum member cars and wonder if narrow lines is right for a 64?
Asking this because of the cars with narrow lines is newer than my 64 so when i buy new tires what is the right choice?

When you decide to buy tires for that '64 coupe stay with 1" white wall... that's what came on the '63-'64 year models. IMHO, a much narrower line white wall wouldn't look rigt for the car. I don't think you want to screw up the fine looks of your red '64 coupe. Very nice car

Well, you want to know what I think, ok.
I hate whitewalls on corvettes. Real Sports Cars don't have whitewall tires. Did you ever see a whitewall tire on a Ferrari ? I don't think so. Corvettes should not have them either (except 53/54s).
If GM put them on Corvettes originally, that was because they wanted to appeal to a wider market, and were confused. I am pretty sure they don't do it anymore. By now they understand what the car is about.
Put white walls on your caddie, or your Chevy II or Buick Skylark. Perfect!
On a Mid-year Corvette, especially one with side kickstand thingies, and big bulgy hoods,,,, Hah ! I wouldn't be caught dead in it.
StingU2 I think as you suggest when i buy new tires i will buy the same dimension that i have on the car today
65hihp You have a point about what you say about sportscars and whitewalls bud i had a look at the owners manual and it shows whitewalls so i guess you could get it with and without whitewalls.

Yes, I would stay with that same size. Also, you could get black wall tires in '64 on your car.

Saint,
I know you could get the car with whitewalls originally; as I said, GM was confused. But I would not put whitewalls on a corvette. It is a sportscar, and real sportscars do not have whitewalls. The car looks much mo betta with red or gold lines, or all black tires. You may disagree, and if so, I won't hold it against you. MikeM might, but I won't.
I am beginning to see the real benefit of not having a perfectly restored original car. I just have blackwalls on my 63 SWC but if I wanted a red stripe or a gold one or whatever at least I would just do it. I like all the mid year vettes, especially the ones I've seen posted on this board. I think I'm just lucky that I don't care if the car is original or not because it doesn't limit me to anything.
OK, I have showed it before, but here it is again, for you slow larners...
OK, I was expecting a series of pictures to support your point that since NO sports car (Ferrari is the brand you mentioned in particular) has whitewalls, you must have examples of cars other than Corvettes that have used redlines or goldlines. If not, this infers that any coloured sidewall is inappropriate for a 'real' sports car.
